"I won't, I promise," she said with a slight chuckle. Like she could ever forget that. Not when he told her every day, showered her with kisses, and there was also those rings she was wearing on her left hand. Oh, and the kid. The kid who was a physical manifestation of their love for each other. Him, too.

Tyler practically worshiped the ground Rose and Billy walked on. It was the family he'd always wanted. Sure, he'd dreamed of having a house full of rugrats running around, but what did that matter? He had her, and he had a son, and that was enough.
"You'll right to me, won't ya? Tell me everything that's goin' on?"

"Of course I will. You just write to us first so we know where to send them." She kissed his jaw lazily before turning her back to him, snuggling up against his chest and closing her eyes.

He brushed her hair, watching her fall asleep. He stayed up a lot longer, thinking, wishing things were different. But he knew he had to leave.
It took a long time before he finally fell asleep.

The whole next day, while Tyler was at work, she tried to keep herself as busy as possible. Especially when Billy came home from school in the afternoon. When he wasn't there, she took the opportunity to have some good cries, take a hot bath, read a dirty novel, and the like.
When it came the usual time for Tyler to come home, Rose couldn't help but glance at the door every few seconds as she helped Billy with his reading homework.

Tyler came home later than usual, having first stopped at the recruiting office on the way home. He came inside looking tired, hanging up his coat.

As usual, she let Billy run to him first, as she stayed in the kitchen. Dinner was already on the table; she'd made pot roast, Tyler's favorite.

He scooped Billy up, holding him a little tighter, hugging him a little longer than usual, face nuzzling the crook of his son's neck. "Hey, buddy."

"Mommy made your favorite food because she loves you. She told me," he said, laughing as the stubble on Tyler's face tickled his neck. "And I played Cowboys with Freddy today at school, and my horse was named Buddy just like you call me, and then we..."
Rose just laughed to herself, rolling her eyes good naturedly at how talkative their son was.

He swallowed the lump in his throat, giving Billy a smile that didn't quite reach his eyes, listening to him go on and on about his day. The life of a first grader was apparently very exciting.
He carried him to the table sitting him down, then moved to Rose, gathering her up and kissing her soundly.

She wrapped her arms around his neck tightly, kissing him with her eyes shut tightly, almost wincing. He looked tired and worried, and she just wanted to kiss everything better.

He nuzzled her, kissing her until Billy started 'ewwwing' and he chuckled, pulling away. "Come on. Let's eat."

Rose was unusually quiet during dinner, but Billy didn't notice. He just took it as an opportunity to talk about all sorts of nonsense. After playing with her food, pushing it around her plate, Rose took her still almost full plate to the sink, wrapping her food up with the other leftovers.

Tyler ate, wanting to savor her cooking, knowing it would be a while before he got her pot roast again. When they were all done, eating, he stood up. "Hey, how 'bout we have a family meetin' in the livin' room?"

Billy gasped. "Are we getting a puppy?!" he cried, his eyes wide with excitement.
Rose couldn't help but laugh at that, ruffling his hair before taking his hand and walking with him into the living room. "Maybe soon," she said, actually thinking it would be a good idea. It had been a while since their old dog, Rusty, died.
