Tyler scooped up Billy, wanting to carry him. "I think yer mama should definitely get you a puppy soon." He sat on the couch, Billy on his lap. He looked over at Rosie, eyes sad, but he tried to smile.

Rose curled up, her legs underneath her as she sat beside Tyler and Billy. She propped her elbow on the back of the sofa, pulling at her hair as she tilted her head to look at Tyler, frowning.
Billy poked Tyler's arm, looking back and forth between him and Rose. "Daddy," he whispered. "Why does mommy look sad?"

Oh, Jesus. Tyler almost gulped, trying to swallow down that damn lump in his throat. "Well, Billy...have they been talkin' in school about what's been goin' on? Across the ocean, in Europe?"

He nodded vigorously. "They're fighting and stuff," he answered, smiling with pride.

He nodded, licking his lips. "Yeah, it's gettin' pretty bad, and the good guys ain't doin' so well. So the President's decided that we oughta send some of our people to go help out..." He glanced up at Rose, meeting her eyes.

Rose just looked away, tears already forming in her eyes.
"You mean like cowboys?" Billy asked, his brow furrowed.

He nodded carefully. "Kinda like cowboys, yeah. I, uh...Daddy's gotta go over there and help, too..." He looked down at Billy. "I'm leaving leavin' on Monday...to an army base in Michigan. Then I gotta go to France..."

Monday. That was only three days away.
"You're leaving? For how long?" Billy asked, frowning and understanding why his mommy had looked so sad. He didn't want his daddy to leave, but if it was only for a few days, that would be okay.

He sighed. "I dunno, buddy. Several months, at least. Maybe a year." He brushed his hand over Billy blonde hair.

"A year? That's January, February, March, April, May, June..." Rose put a hand on his arm, silently telling him to stop. Billy looked up at his daddy, tears starting to fall from his eyes. "But I don't want you to go."

Tyler's chest constricted as he gathered Billy against his chest, rocking him. "I know, buddy. I know. But I gotta. They need our help over there, and Daddy's gotta do the right thing."

The thought of his daddy leaving and never coming back didn't even cross his mind, he was just upset he would be gone for so long. Rose, of course, was much more worried about the former.
"Billy, honey, it'll be okay. You and me, we'll have a good time together and we'll write letters to daddy and I'll get you a puppy and we'll eat ice cream all the time and every night we'll look at the moon and we'll know that daddy's looking at the same moon," she said, leaning close and talking softly to him.

That almost made Tyler break down completely, but he held it together, only sniffing as he kissed Billy's hair, reaching a hand out to take Rose's, squeezing it. "I'll be home before ya know it, buddy. I promise."

Billy just cried, asking nonsense questions like "What if you forget me?" or "What if you find a new family?" which were obviously answered by both Tyler and Rose in very convincing ways.
"Hey, I've got an idea," Rose said. Billy lifted his head to look at her. "Let's do nothing but really fun things this weekend. How about that? We'll take you horseback riding and we can have a picnic in the park and whatever you wanna do."

Tyler kissed Billy's head, glad he was still young enough not to protest such shows of affection. He ruffled his hair. "We'll have a good weekend, buddy. Promise. Now come on. Bedtime."
