Zippy blushed. "No, I didn't know that," She said softly, desperate to change the subject again. "You are awfully flattering, David Jacobs."

He smiled at her, looking at her face, blushing, too. "Nah. Just telling the truth and making a fool of myself."

"Who says you are making a fool of yourself?" Zippy asked, tilting her head at him. He was being much more blunt that she had expected, but it was nice. A bit much, but nice all the same.

He cleared his throat, shifting awkwardly. "Well, I mean...I don't exactly have the best track record when it comes to flirting..."

"Really?" Zippy asked, crossing her arms over her chest. "Why do you say that? I think you are doing a wonderful job" She smiled at him.

He turned red, but grinned at her. "Really? So...it's working, then?"

"I'd say so," Zippy laughed, her cheeks turning pink. "But I'm not sure what your definition of 'working' is."

He lifted a shoulder, because he wasn't so sure, either. "Well, I mean...can we count today as a date?"

Zippy smiled at him. He was cute, she'd give him that. And he made her feel blissful and playful again. "Yes, I think we can. But you keep asking me questions. I wanna hear more about you. Besides for being in a rough patch with your friends, what do you enjoy doing when you aren't leading the newsies to strike victories?"

He laughed, pleased with the turn things were taking. "I dunno. I'm kinda boring. I'm real good at Scrabble and I'm in charge of helpin' my parents with bills since I do math the best. I like it here at the zoo, and sitting by the pond in the park to read."

"And how is that boring?" Zippy asked, chuckling to herself. David seemed like a pure guy- someone she should be with, but a guy like that had never shown that much interest in her.
Plus, she was crazy. Innocent, pure, and polite did NOT mix with crazy, abandoned, and bruised. It just didn't.

He shrugged. "I'm just not as fun or exciting as some of the other guys. I'm not as charming as Jack, or a party animal like Race and Blink, or cool like Spot, and I'm definitely not as, well, big and manly as that Tristan guy from Brooklyn."

"Tristan is an asshole, you don't want to be anything like him," zippy replied, rolling her eyes.

He blinked at her, surprised by her immediate response. "O--okay. Guess I don't then." He looked at her curiously.

"David," Zippy began, looking at him seriously, "I know that I just met you and all, and I'm saying this in front of a couple of camels, but if you don't start believing in yourself that you're great, no one else will either. It's pure fact." It is what Tag always told her, so Zippy believed it to be true. Even though she had trouble seeing herself as much. But David didn't have to know that.
