A few more men dashed down the cellar stairs, shouting for even more backup as Leo began to fight them all.
They were all decent swordsman, but nothing compared to what Zorro was. Finally one of them grabbed Kathryn and held a knife to her throat. "drop your sword Zorro or she's dead."

The terrified shriek that escaped Kathryn's lips was real, but the quivering lips and stifled sobs were an act. She held the dagger tightly in her hand, slowly moving her arm up. Then, without warning, she stabbed the man in the gut. Her eyes were shut tightly.

Even Leo's jaw dropped but only for a moment, reacting quickly stabbing his sword at the rest of the guys, and knocking the rest out. He rarely killed, and tried not to, but he barely cared where his sword went at his point.
"you okay?" he asked Katheyn, "I'm sorry you had to see me like that."

Despite feeling like she was about to faint (she desperately hoped she didn't), she nodded. The hand holding the dagger lay at her side; she had no intention of looking at it anytime soon.
"Now, how do we get out of here?"

Leo took her knife, wiping it on his pants and sticking it in his boot. "there may be more men upstairs. A part of me wants you to stay down here, but it makes more sense for you to just with me so I can watch you..." he took her hand, helping her up the stairs.
"you see anyone?" he whispered to her, right at her side.

Her eyes wide, she looked through the dark, trying to detect anyone lurking in the shadows. "I...I don't think so...but surely not all the men came running down. They'd be stupid not to leave someone up here..."

Leo sighed. "I'll go first." he climbed out of the cellar and then pulled her out with him. "stay alert, and...stay close."
He glanced around the room, his sword out in front of him.

Kathryn stuck to his back like glue, making sure to look behind them every once in a while. It was during one of those moments that she tripped over something. Obviously it was something that made a loud noise. "Shit!" she hissed, bumping into Leo.

Leo turned to steady her, but they were already too late.
A gun clicked into place behind Leo's head.
"we need her for ransom, Zorro. Give her to us or you both die." Zorro turned to look at the man, who had a rifle shoved to his face.

A surge of courage coursed through Kathryn's body, and she stepped up in front of Leo. "Then just take me, you coward. I'm right here. Or are you too afraid that you won't be quick enough for Zorro? Is that it? Hmm?"

Kathryn was surprising him left and right, but he couldn't let them take her.
The man hesitated with his rifle, just long enough for Leo to stabbed him hard in the side with his sword and knock the rifle out of his hand. "grab the gun!" Leo shouted to Kathryn as the man began to sword fight with him.

She followed her instructions, grabbing the gun and yanking it away from the man. But not before pushing it back into his face. She could hear the bone-crunching thud it made, and she almost threw up.

The man fell to the ground, and Leo didn't even hesitate. There was one guy left, and Leo lifted his sword at him, pressing it to his chest.
"What do your men want?"
The man glanced down at the sword, then back up at Zorro. "I will be dead anyway if I told you anything."
Frustrated, Leo punched him hard, knocking him out. "Something big is going on here, Kathryn. Let's get out of here." He took her hand and led her outside. He didn't see his horse anywhere, but when he whistled, Tornado came running up.
"Hey," he greeted his horse, touching his snout. "I hope you are all right." Leo turned to Kathryn, and threw her on his horse, before joining her.

Everything had happened so quickly, Kathryn barely even remembered to breathe. Once she was atop Zorro's well known steed, however, she exhaled heavily.
"Yes, I...I'm quite all right..." At least she thought so. She wrapped her arms tightly around his waist, pressing her cheek to his back.

Leo urged his horse forward and Tornado sprinted home. Back at Leo's house, Alexander met him in the barn as Leo was helping Kathryn off the horse.
"thank goodness you are both all right!" he grabbed Leo's hand and then kathryn's.
"Yes. We are both okay. Please send a telegram to the mayor letting him know Zorro has Kathryn and she's safe, and will be home shortly."
