"Oh, that reminds me. The reason I asked you if you had any plans tonight is because my father is hosting a Benefit Gala tonight. It's for the local orphanages." She turned to look up at him, her eyebrows raised in anticipation. "Would you...like to come? As my date?"
They had never really crossed that line before; mainly their relationship had just been classmates and friends who sometimes saw each other outside of school. But Kathryn decided it might be time to change that.

Leo hesitated. He promised Alexander, his butler, that he wouldn't cross that line with Kathryn. But he looked into those beautiful eyes- he couldn't say no. What was the harm in one date? Besides, he was secretly thrilled to spend time with her.
"I'd be honored," Leo smiled at her, nodding. "Are you sure? I'm not exactly the type of man your father would want you to bring."

"It starts at 7," she informed him, tucking her newspaper under her arm as she began to walk home. "And it's black tie."

"Noted." Leo replied, promising her with his eyes he'll be there on time. Leo headed home to his large home and stable buried in the town's surrounding country. Alexander, his butler that he had inherited from his father (who taught him his excellent sword fighting and riding skills ) was already a late lunch. Alex was the only other person who knew that Leo was Zorro.
"Saw the papers," Alex greeted, handing Leo a turkey sandwich . Leo nodded, with a shrug before adding, "I'm attending a charity event tonight with Kathryn. Can you please prepare my tux?" Alex mumbled under his breath in Spanish, shaking his head as he walked away.
Leo smiled, ever fond of his butler. His father's trust fund money mostly went to paying Alexander, which was why Leo needed more money. Leo headed to his room to shower and at 6:45 sharp knocked on Kathryn's door, all suited up. He had emergency Zorro outfit hidden on his horse, just in case.

Kathryn was far too important to ever answer the door, plus she was still busy getting ready for the gala. Or at least her maid was busy. Ergo, one of the servants opened the door and ushered him in. "Miss Van Wyck will be down momentarily. There's champagne and hor d'ourves through the double doors."

Leo nodded politely and headed inside. He often wondered why Kathryn bothered going to school, but he was too polite to ask her. He reached for a glass of champagne and sipped slowly, eyeing the other guests for any - well, he couldn't help it- suspicious behavior.

Kathryn descended the staircase but a few minutes after Leo's arrival, her eyes scanning the ever growing crowd of the city's richest people. She was wearing a deep sapphire gown, and her chocolate brown hair was done up in an elaborate but elegant coiffure, with curls and braids and bejeweled pins.
She spotted Leo drinking a glass of champagne and a twinkle came to her eye as she smiled at him.

Leo's eyes immediately fell on hers, and he absolutely beamed up at her as she descended down the stairs. He grabbed another glass of champagne and met her at the bottom, offering her the drink and then his arm.
"You look absolutely stunning," he greeted, breathing her in. She smelled fantastic as well, but he decided not to add that.

"Why, thank you," she replied, taking a sip of her champagne. "You don't look so bad, either." In fact, he looked even more handsome than he usually did. Over the past few months, Kathryn had tried to tell herself she wasn't infatuated with him; any relationship they had would most likely end in heartache. But if she told herself that right now, she knew she'd be lying.

Leo wasn't able to take his eyes off her. Suddenly he wondered what life would be like if he wasn't Zorro--he would then have the option to publicly whoo Kathryn, maybe even court her. Leo calmed himself by believing that even in that alternate universe, he still had no chance with a girl like her.
"This is quite the event," Leo remarked, guiding her into the ballroom. "I've never been to something like this before." Invited, Leo silently added. As Zorro he's had to crash multiple fancy gatherings.

"You'll get bored in about an hour's time," she assured him. Then she tilted her glass a bit. "Unless we drink a bit too much of this, of course..."

She smirked at him before downing the rest of her glass in one gulp. "The night's off to a good start, I have to say..."
