"Well, sure, who doesn't like Christmas." She took another swig, scrunching her nose. She handed him back the flask. "It's nice, isn't it? Presents, snow, mistletoe. The whole nine yards."

"And the singing, and the baking, and the ice skating," he added playfully, chuckling to himself as he took back the flask and took another drink. He set the flask down briefly between them, his hands coming to rest on top of his knees. "You know, it wouldn't surprise me one bit if you told me you spent weeks gathering up the perfect ingredients for your special fruitcake recipe."
Hell, this girl was already reminding him enough of April as it was, with her large amounts of holiday cheer! It seemed only natural to him that she would have a top secret fruitcake recipe to go with it.

She made a face. "Oh, hell no, me? Bake? I'd blow up the oven."

"Fair enough," he laughed, inwardly breathing a sigh of relief. He was beginning to think that he was sharing a drink with some strange version of his deceased girlfriend.
"Maybe, if you're lucky, I can teach you," he joked, his laughter finally returning.

She grinned at him. "Aw, you know how to bake? Really? Don't know many boys who know their way around a kitchen."

"It wasn't by choice, trust me!" He laughed and shook his head before picking up his flask again.
"It's unavoidable when you have a girlfriend who would spend weeks baking fruitcakes, cookies, those gingerbread people..." he remarked, his voice slowly trailing off when he started to realize exactly what it was it was saying to this girl he hardly knew. Slowly, he shook his head. "It, umm, it was a long time ago. I probably couldn't do it anymore.

She regarded him thoughtfully, playing with a piece of her hair. "That why you're up here drinkin'? You're sad about your girl?"

"Well, I haven't got much else to do but drink at the moment, I'm afraid," he said, half-joking. "Got my work done for the day. Don't really spend too much time with the other lodgers here, so what else have I got to do but sit up here with my thoughts?"
He paused and looked at his flask before setting it back down. "It's just hard not to think about her during Christmas. She lived for it. Every last bit of it."

Trixie gave him a sympathetic look, touching his knee again, giving it a squeeze. "The holidays'll do that to a person." She thought a minute, then asked, "Where is she? Your girl?"

"She, umm, she's gone," he answered quietly. He lifted his hand up and pushed it through his hair slowly. It was bad enough he was talking to this girl he just met about his girlfriend, but how was he supposed to tell her that, on top of everything, she had died nearly two years ago?
"It's been two years," he continued after a pause. "I always think that it'll get better and it does for a while, but Christmas just brings her right back... if that makes any sense."

Trixie cooed out a sympathetic sound, then got up, moving to sit beside him on the floor. "Hey...hey, it's okay. I'm sorry I made ya bring it up."

"It's not your fault. You know, maybe it's not so bad to talk about it," he offered, not wanting her to feel guilty about it. "I haven't talked about her in the longest time. Maybe that's part of why she's stuck around in my mind for so long."
He watched her sit town next to him and offered her a slight smile. "You're a saint for listening to all this, you know that?"

She giggled, shaking her head. "Aw, honey, trust me. I ain't no saint."

"Maybe not, but for listening to me rambling on like this, you're certainly a little saint-like," he laughed, still watching her. "I just know that some girls don't exactly like hearing a guy talk about another girl. Or maybe this is just one more thing that I've got wrong about you."

She lifted a shoulder. "Well, sure, girls don't like hearin' the guys they're into talk about another girl. Hurts our feelin's. But we just met, and I ain't in love with you yet, so talk away." She grinned at him.
