She jumped, finally tearing her eyes away from the package. "Tyler," she said on a breath, her heart fluttering. "Oh, I'm sorry. I got...distracted." She set the package down and opened her suitcase to retrieve a flannel shirt and pants.

He frowned, watching her. "What's in the box?"

"Don't know," she replied, heading into the bathroom to change. Once she was facing away from Tyler, she bit her lip, her brow furrowed. She had a good idea what it was...she just wondered how it had gotten there.

He blinked, following her. "Well, who's it from, Rose?"

"It...doesn't say. The outside is blank," she informed him, ducking into a stall and closing the door. She began to change, then stood up on her toes so she could see him. "There's probably a card or something inside."

He arched a brow at her. "Well, ya gonna open it?"

She hesitated. "...Yeah," she finally replied. "I just didn't want to in front of everyone." Even though there were only about three other girls in the room. Two of them were whispering conspiratorially to each other, and the other was reading an explicit novel.
Once she'd buttoned up her shirt, she emerged, leaving her dress in there. One of the other girls could take it for all she cared.

"Well, then come back to the attic with me. We'll sleep in there tonight. Bring your box."

Nodding, she headed back to her bunk and grabbed the box. Her heart raced as she tucked it under her arm. She hadn't wanted to open it in front of anyone, Tyler included... But it seemed she had no choice now.
She followed him back up the attic and took a seat on the mattress again, crossing her legs Indian style and setting the package behind her back.

He sat across from her, leaning back against the wall. He frowned, watching her. "Rose. Who's the box from?"

She shrugged, but didn't meet his eyes. "I don't know. I told you, it doesn't say." She had a pretty good idea, though she wasn't positive.

He sighed, because he thought she was lying to him. "So open it and find out."

She stared at the space on the wall next to him, then sighed. "Okay," she muttered. She reached for the package and set it in her lap. She had a feeling this wasn't going to go well.
She untied the string and carefully ripped the paper off the box. Upon opening the box, there was indeed a card in there. She read it silently, and her thoughts were confirmed. It was a birthday present from her grandma. But how had it found its way to the House? To her bed?
Underneath some flimsy tissue paper, Rose saw some gloves, a scarf, a hat and a pair of shoes buried in the box. No matter how much she wanted to dislike her grandmother, she couldn't say she skimped on Rose's birthday presents.

He arched a brow at the gifts. "What's the card say?"

She silently handed it to him, her eyes still fixed on the box. It said, simply, "Hope you're safe. Wherever you are, I'm sure you'll need these. Happy Birthday. Love, Grandmother."
