It was six in the morning and it was cold. Alec blinked his eyes, trying his best to stay awake as he made his way towards the homeless shelter. He didn't think his punishment was going to be this bad for getting into a fight at school. Then again, he never thought much through.
Since it was the holidays, the school decided to let him volunteer at the shelter instead of picking up trash at school. He sighed, seeing the building come into view as he tried to put on his best smile. This shouldn't be too bad...[/]

Natalie volunteered at the shelter every year. It was a family tradition. She was already there, blonde hair in a loose braid over her shoulder and her apron on as she set up breakfast. They would start serving in fifteen minutes.

Alec awkwardly walked inside, not exactly sure what to do. He'd never been to one of these before, anyway. He spotted a blonde not too far away and immediately made his way towards her. She definitely looked like she was doing...
"Hey, uh, who do I talk to around here to help?"

She lifted her head. Holy crap. It was Alec. They went to school together.
And he was awfully pretty.
"Uh, me, I guess. I'm the shift supervisor today. Hi."

"Hi," he replied. She looked familiar but he couldn't exactly place his finger on it... "Do you go to school? I mean, uh, I'm sure you do -- I meant, do I know you?"

She nodded at him. "We have chem together. I'm Natalie. Natalie Duncan." She stuck her hand out at him.

"Oh, yeah, yeah, that's right, Natalie," nodded Alec as he smiled at her. "Do you come here a lot? The school sent me here." He wondered if she knew how much trouble he got into. Then he wondered how she could possibly look so pretty at this time in the morning.

She nodded. "I volunteer at least once a week from Thanksgiving to New Year's." She handed him an apron and plastic serving gloves. "You'll help with serving breakfast."

"Okay," he replied, putting on the apron and taking the gloves from her. "You do this every week? Wow, that's nice... uh, so where do you want me?"

"Here." She pointed him at the eggs station. "People are going to be let in soon. Give them one spoonful of eggs, but try to make it a little heaping. They're hungry." She stood beside him at the tray holding hashbrowns.

"Got it," he nodded, looking over at the eggs station. "You're, uh, going to be running around the whole time?"
He really didn't mind helping out but if there was someone else that he knew around, it may not be as bad.

She shook her head. "We all have stations or jobs to do. I'm working the food line with you, and a couple others." She singled for someone to open the doors -- there was already a long line of people waiting to be fed, and they started to file in.

"Okay, well, I'll see you when I see you," smiled Alec as he walked towards the eggs station. He hesitantly looked over at the door, amazed at how much people were lining up. Once the doors opened, he picked up the serving spoon and smiled brightly.

They had a few feet between them, and for the next hour, they were completely focused on serving the people who came in.
Natalie was all smiles, saying good morning to each person, chatting casually with them. Many knew who she was.

Alec glanced over at Natalie once in a while, curious and amazed at how she worked this morning. He was sure that if he was homeless, she'd be a sight to see.
Once the line died down, Alec sighed and smiled over at Natalie. "How long do you usually stay here?"
