Race came out of Annie's with a feeling of triumph. He'd just bought the last of his Christmas presents. Granted, he'd also blown the last of his poker and faro winnings, but the way he'd been gambling lately, he'd make twice that amount again by the end of the week.
He checked all his bags and reviewed his purchases: pastries for Mush and Ershey, a new bandanna for Jack (his old one looked ready to fall apart), a necklace for Rae, baby clothes for Sean, candy for Tristan's kids (Tristan and Nevada would have to settle for a stack of baby-sitting IOUs), wine for Risk, tea for Macbeth, and crayons for Jo. He'd mailed Sapphy's gift a week ago, knowing how unreliable the post was. Certain he hadn't forgotten anyone, he strode down the street in a better mood than he'd known in ages, whistling a medley of Christmas carols.

Raven was out and about with Sean, wandering the streets of New York. Sean was marveling at all the pretty Christmas decorations, oohing and aaahing at the pretty lights. "So pretty right?" She said. Sean agreed, "ya!" She laughed and kissed his cheek. She stopped in front of a toy store, Sean pointed at a little wooden rocking horse, smiling at his mother.
"I know..." She sighed, but honestly, she couldn't afford extras like fancy toys. "Look at the train," she said and smiled.

Race was walking past with his bags and turned to smile at the young mother and baby admiring the toys in a shop window. Then he realized who it was. "Rae!" He clutched his bags protectively, hiding the contents. "What're you doing downtown?"

"Hey! Well I was showing Sean all the pretty lights and decorations. Only window shopping of course," she smiled.
"Hi!" Sean screamed at Race, waving at his uncle.

"Hi there!" Race grinned at Sean, then gave Rae a stern look. "No looking in the bags!" He followed Sean's gaze to the toy train. "Aww, kid, I know how ya feel. We'd get it for you if we could, I swear."

"mm," Sean said his lip bulging out in a very sad pout.
"oh Seany don't do that to me," Rae said with a heavy sigh and kissed his cheek.
She glanced at Race, "So...what's in there that you don't want me looking?" she tried to peek in anyway of course.

"Hey!" He yanked the bags away. "Horrible, toxic things. Don't get too close." Smirking, he headed down the street, figuring they should get poor Sean away from the unattainable toys. "Any plans for Christmas?"

She shook her head, "Nope, I'm probably going to be at the lodging house with everyone else." She smiled, "It'll be fun." As they walked she pointed out the Santa to Sean who stared wide eyed and then buried his face in his mother's shoulder.
"I just couldn't get any presents for anyone this year," she said.

"'Course not, you got a kid to think of," Race said. "And if that guy of yours is still giving you wine on credit, I think everyone'll be satisfied." A Christmas dinner with friends and vintage wine...what could be more perfect?
Well, other than a Christmas dinner with friends and wine and Sapphy. Obviously.

"Oh don't worry, I got a special bottle for you," She said with a huge grin.

He smiled at the thought, almost forgetting about Sapphy for a moment. Unfortunately, that made room for the one other subject that he'd been trying to stay far away from for quite a long a time now. "Hey, Rae, you heard anything from Brooklyn lately?"

"Nah, I'm completely out of the loop. I only knew so much cause of being Spot's girl otherwise I wouldn't have known a damn thing. Why? Something wrong there?" She asked, getting a little worried. She hoped that Freddy was doing okay with the lodging house.

"That's just it," he said with a frown. "I ain't heard nothing either. I mean, maybe no news good is good news, but..." He shrugged. "I might drop by sometime, see how things are going."

"Do yourself a favor and stay the hell out of that place." she said sternly, "It's like a vortex that sucks you in and before you know it you can't get out." she sighed heavily, "let it be Freddy's problem if something is going on okay?"

"I'll take it under consideration," Race muttered, not meeting her eyes. They both knew he'd go back. Brooklyn was to him what Spot Conlon was to Raven. It abused him, heaped misery upon him, convinced him to walk away again and again, but he always went back.
