It was done.
Eastman was dead. Script had been on the front page of every paper in the Tri-State area after her heart-wrenching testimony in court. And the Refuge had been shut-down until further notice.
The day they were set to release all the inmates, Cav stood nervously outside the gates, waiting.

"...and we're gonna have a dog, I really want a dog," Yankee rambled as she and about two hundred other inmates poured down the stairs, with a couple of cops leading the way. "And one'a those big potted plants, and some bookshelves, and a great big fireplace...whadda you want, Bitter?"
"Paz y tranquilo," Bitter muttered darkly.
"Footsteps, you sure you don't wanna move in with us?" Yankee demanded, then frowned when her friend didn't answer. "'Steps! You've been quiet all morning, and you're never quiet! Say something, damn it!"
They finally reached the door. Yankee and Bitter went out first, then waited while Footsteps slowly followed them. "Fresh air," she murmured, a huge smile finally replacing the dazed expression on her face. She let out a crazy laugh and hugged her friends, then turned around and gaped. There was a very familiar boy standing by the gates.
She had never run so fast or tackled someone so hard in her life.

Cav caught her, arms wrapping around her tightly. He buried his face in the crook of her neck and held her. A lump formed in his throat, and for a moment he was terrified he might cry.
He kissed her neck, murmuring into her hair. "Hi, 'Steps."
((I. Love them. So. Much. Also, New!Footsteps is sooo pretty!))

((I KNOW. ;D For some reason, it took me so long to find just the right pic for her. And my love for Cav is infinite.))
"Hey," she said, her smile huger than ever, not at all ashamed of the tears sparkling in her eyes. "I knew you guys'd come through." And she leaned in and kissed him, ignoring the cheers and catcalls from the crowd (with Yankee and Bitter being the loudest of all).

He framed her face in his hands, kissing her desperately, melting against her. When he finally pulled back to breath, he kept holding her face, pressing his forehead to hers.
"Come home with me."

She nodded happily. "I'd be delighted, sir."
"Oh, that's why she ain't moving in with us," Yankee muttered, having elbowed her way over to join Cav and 'Steps.
"Seriously? Could you be any slower, chica?" Bitter said with a smirk, earning her an elbow to the shoulder.
Footsteps chuckled, turned away from Cav reluctantly, and put her hands on her hips. "Good luck, you two. Let me know as soon as you find a place. And you can find me at number nine, Duane Street till further notice." She kissed them both on the cheek, ignored the torrent of teasing remarks, and returned to Cav's side with a grin, holding out her hand. "Let's get outta here, huh?"

He nodded, his stomach flip-flopping with nerves and excitment. He took her hand squeezing it. He waved at the girls before leading Steps away.
He was quiet along time before blurting out. "I missed you."

"I missed you too," she blurted out, and looked away for a moment; between seeing Cav, saying goodbye to the girls, and experiencing freedom for the first time in three years, she was getting rather choked up. She pulled out a handkerchief and dabbed at the sudden flood of tears, laughing and crying at the same time. "Sorry! Sorry. It's been a long..." She took a deep breath and smiled at him again. "How have you been? How's Goblin? I would've thought he'd want to come out and see this."
She motioned at the streets around them, where former Refuge kids were milling in every direction, still figuring out what to do with themselves.

Cav moved to slide his arm around her shoulders, kissing her hair. "It's okay, I get it."
When she asked about Goblin, he sighed. "He, uh...he's in the infirmary."

She paled at that bit of news. "It's nothing too bad, is it?" She'd been worried about Goblin ever since the night he came to see Riddle. Things had gotten really crazy in the Refuge after that, and she'd figured things must be getting crazy on the outside too.

Cav sighed again. "Well, he's alive..." He glanced over at her, giving her shoulders a squeeze. "I'll explain everything when we get to the House. I promise."
He led her there in silence, overwhelmed by having her so near him after so long. He wasn't altogether sure what to do.
When they got to the LH, he led her inside. "You hungry?"

"Starved," she admitted with a shaky smile, though she followed him inside rather reluctantly. The cold wind on her face felt wonderful. She looked around the lobby, taking it all in as she followed him toward what she assumed to be the kitchen. "This place is nice...wish I'd known about it three years ago, I never would've slept on that damn park bench," she said with a chuckle.
Though if she really had to do it over, she knew perfectly well she'd do things just the same. Without the Refuge, she never would have met Goblin, or Yankee and Bitter--or, most importantly, Cav.

He nodded, moving towards the kitchen. "I think we got sandwich stuff. I don't use the kitchen real often, and Script...well, she doesn't cook much anymore."

She nodded solemnly, forgetting about food for a moment as she leaned wearily against the counter. "How's Script doing? I can't stop thinking about...I mean, I wish there was something we coulda done...it was our job to protect her." Footsteps had yet to forgive herself. Goblin probably thought it was all his fault, but he hadn't even been there when the warden summoned Script. Unlike her.

He shook his head. "She ain't doin' so hot. She's got a boyfriend, nice guy. But she's not over Goblin, or what happened. Not by a long shot." While he talked, he got out bread and deli meat, putting it on plates before searching for mustard. "Plus, she's been real sick lately."
