"I still don't see what the point is," Macbeth grumbled, scowling at Risk as the ferry approached the distant, rural shore of Staten Island. "It's a tree. That you put inside. And you string some popcorn on it. And then it dies." Less than a week until Christmas, and she was playing the role of Scrooge like she was born to play it.

"But it's fun!" said Risk, smiling at her widely as he held Jo in his arms. "And besides, it'll be fun for Jo to experience, right? The place will look less dreary too... and it'll smell good! I'll take care of it, I swear."
((I just envisioned what Risk would like if he tried convincing Macbeth that they should get a dog, haha))

"You'll get drunk and knock it over and everything will break," she replied coolly, positively relishing her lack of holiday spirit. "All Christmas means is I gotta punch half a dozen people if I set foot downtown 'cause the crowds are so damn hectic."
"Water!" Jo yelled, pointing excitedly at the half-frozen river, then forgot about it a second later as she went back to playing with her favorite toy, Risk's fingers.
((Hahaha! She is so a cat person.))

"That's right, Jo," chuckled Risk, holding her close. He glanced over at Beth and smirked. "Alright, we won't go downtown. We can just stay inside and hide under the covers. Deal?"

"Whose covers?" she grumbled, watching the ferry navigate through a maze of little icebergs--then cursed herself a second later, as she totally hadn't intended that the way it came out.

Risk quirked an eyebrow at her. "Who else's?"

"Well...you've got your covers, and I've got my covers, so..." Now she was blushing and cursing herself in two languages. "Hey, Jo, look at the docks!"
"Docks!" Jo yelled, bouncing up and down and waving at the people on land. "Cwismas twee!"

Risk simply smirked at Macbeth, dropping the subject and refusing to embarrass her any further.
"Look, we're almost there!" said Risk, gently tickling Jo as the boat gently came to a stop. He glanced over at Macbeth, wondering if he should even hold her hand.

"Someday, you're gonna learn the art of scowling and growling," Macbeth said darkly to Jo as they descended onto the dock. To Risk, she demanded, "You even know where this place is?" And took his hand without even thinking about it.

"It's not far... Race told me about it," he answered, smiling as she held his hand. "You can even pick one out and I won't say anything."

A positively evil smirk lit her face. "Yer gonna regret that." She let him lead the way, her smirk soon fading into the usual scowl, though only Risk, Jo, and an appalling number of cows were there to appreciate it. She'd never passed so many farms in her life. It smelled worse than Five Points! Well, almost.

"Can you try to at least stop frowning?" teased Risk once he noticed the look on her face. He spotted a cluster of trees a few yards away, Jo already gurgling in his arms.

"Why should I?" she asked, perfectly reasonably, as far as she was concerned. "It's gonna take more convincing than that, kid."
"TWEES!" Jo shrieked, waving her arms, and Beth's mouth quirked, but she stubbornly maintained her glare.

"Are you always like this during this time of year?" he smirked, leading them inside, loving the smell of pine trees.

"'Cause I'm so bloody chipper the rest'a the year?" She snorted, then looked around critically at the trees. Jo was wriggling and flailing, beside herself with excitement. "This is crazy...they've got 'em all indoors like this?" She'd never even pictured this many trees this close together. It was greener than Central Park. She tried to look bored. "Bet this'll cost us a fortune."
