"Any time," she assured him as Jo toddled over to "help" by poking ineffectually at the tree. Beth winced. "Don't do that, love, it'll fall apart."

"Jo, listen to your Aunt Beth," said Risk sternly, shooting her a firm yet kind look.
((AAH they're such a cute and odd little family <3))

((I was just thinking that! Actually, I was going to have Beth say it. And I guess she still will. ;D)) Macbeth looked from Jo to Risk to the poor little tree and shook her head. "We're, uh...really kinda strange, you know that?" ((brb, gotta go briefly celebrate Chanukah...my religious background is very strange, don't even ask ))

Risk shrugged but still smiled brightly. "It just makes things more fun."
((Haha! Have fun! <3))

She raised an eyebrow at him. "Are you really in this good a mood, or are you just trying to compensate for me?" Jo got bored with the tree and toddled around the deck, looking for nonexistent bugs or mice. ((Back! I think I'm physically incapable of winning at dreidel. ))

"Both?" he answered, looking at her hopefully. "You really don't like this time of year?"
((Ooooh you should teach me! Or, we can just fail together <3))

"I don't like people expecting me to be happy," she explained grudgingly. "I mean, I get, 'Hey, Beth, why are you so grumpy?' at least ten times a day the rest of the year, but at Christmastime, it's a bloody nightmare." She scowled up at the tree, then glanced at him. "You go on being happy, though. It's...kinda good to see." ((It's easy! I'm just unlucky. Here's a Wiki explanation: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dreidel#Rules_of_the_game Although we always put two coins in the pot when we got shin, not one, but whatever.))

Risk looked at her in confusion. "Good to see? What's that supposed to mean?"

She smirked. "It means you finally stopped being all angsty about Ershey and the whole Ericson thing and everything else we've been through. So don't start backsliding, 'cause I need you to balance me out."

Risk shrugged. "Things are finally okay, so... wait, did you just say you need me?" he said, smirking at her.

She rolled her eyes at him. "Like it ain't mutual. You'd get yourself shot if I wasn't around. Don't ask me how, but you'd find a way."

"I can take care of myself," said Risk, brows furrowing. The boat finally came to a stop and Risk gently carried the tree towards the docks.

"So can I!" she snapped, taking Jo's hand and following him off the boat. Though she wasn't entirely sure they weren't both lying.

"I didn't say you couldn't!" he laughed, glancing back at her to make sure they were behind him.

"Well...good," she muttered, leaving it at that. She sure as hell wasn't about to say that it would have been nice to hear he needed her, too.
But of course he'd never say that. Because he didn't. No one ever had, except Jo. And even Jo would probably be fine without her--she'd have Tristan, Risk, Ershey...she could disappear tomorrow and no one would really be all that effected. And people wondered why she had no Christmas spirit.
