"No, it's fine. The General usually doesn't like to be kept waiting," she said with a slight smirk. She took Belle and Jefferson by the reins and began to lead them into the stables.

Tyler smirked, then jogged over to Mr. Howard, taking a box. "What's in these?"

"Oh, just some things from the good old days, I assume. Probably some of Rose's artwork from school. I don't really know. I just do what Abigail tells me," he said with a wink.
In the box that Tyler picked up were, indeed, some of Rose's old things. Including her sixth grade diary. It was sitting on top of everything, still holding her twelve-year-old secrets and desires.

Tyler saw it, had 2 seconds to decide just how big of a cad he was, then pocketed the small book quickly before her father saw. He carried boxes up to the attic as he was asked, then when her father said they were done, he snuck off to his room, supposedly to rest up after horseback riding.
He closed the door, laid on his bed, and began to read.

Obviously, Rose wrote mostly about Tyler and their friendship. And how much she pined for him. How she wished she were prettier like Emma, the popular girl that he had confessed to having a crush on. And each entry ended with her swear to marry him one day.
Rose had showered during the box-moving, and was now watching a movie on TV in the living room, wrapped in her favorite blanket.

He read the whole book, then took a shower, mostly to mull it all over in his head. He knew she was just a kid when she wrote that, but he believed that deep down, those feelings were still there. Because they were destined for each other. He'd always known that. Even when he tried to hide it with a fake crush on a girl named Emma he couldn't even remember.
He changed into a tshirt and jeans, hair still a little damp when he went and joined her. "Hey, Sugar." He flopped down next to her.

"Hey," she replied, tearing her eyes away from the romantic comedy on TV. "Dad was looking for you earlier to go help get some wood for the fire tonight. I bailed you out, though, so don't worry."

"Yeah, sorry. I was, uh, taking a shower." He cleared his throat a little, then very carefully, took her hand in his, not saying anything, eyes on the TV.

Rose almost took her hand away. She was engaged to another man after all. But she had always wondered what it would feel like to do this. To hold hands with Tyler. Her heart sped up, and she shifted uncomfortably in her seat. Then she jumped when her father opened the back door, having finished gathering firewood. She slipped her hand out of his, nervously tucking a curl behind her ear.

Tyler watched her, arching a brow, but he didn't say anything.

She got up, heading to the kitchen to help her mom with lunch. She needed to distract herself.
((did you get my pm?))

((I did, I responded, I thought!))
He sighed, hanging his head in his hands, not carrying that her father was stocking the fire. "Lord, help me."

((Oh, whoops. I didn't see it.))
The rest of the weekend passed like that. Rose would almost do something, like offer to share her blanket with Tyler as they made s'mores on the fire, but would stop herself at the last second. And one question had run through her mind the whole time: why had he taken her hand? Was it just a friendly gesture that she was reading way too into? Or...she didn't feel like exploring the other possibilities.

((It's okay I miss them all the time)) Tyler went on with the weekend being nice and polite as he could manage. Rose's mother kept giving him sympathetic looks, which made him feel miserable, but what could he do. He was crazy to think that some stupid crush when they were twelve would still matter ten years later, especially when she was engaged.

The ride back was still fun, but there was a certain air in the car that disturbed Rose. When she parked in his complex parking lot, she turned off the car and took a breath, as if she were about to say something.
