Birdie came down the stairs of the lodging house and back into the lobby, having just been shown around by Ershey. She still had her violin case tucked under her arm, uneasy about leaving it unattended quite yet.
She went up to the counter and leaned against it, peering around for someone who could sign her in. Really, it was a blessing that Ershey had helped her find this place -- playing in the park had its good moments, but the money was scant at best. The newsies she'd seen around Central Park had always seemed so interesting. She couldn't wait to become a newsie herself.

Specs walked down the steps slowly, holding his glasses in one hand as he rubbed his eyes with the other. He'd just woken up from a nap and was now ready to sell for the day. He squinted when he saw a figure in the lobby. Placing his glasses back to where they belong, he raised an eyebrow at the girl. "You, uh, need help?" he asked, quite sure that she was new. ((Wahhh, I have work tomorrow! Oh, the life of a startup!))

Birdie looked up at the sound and straightened, biting her lip. "Oh, um, I was looking for someone to sign me in?" ((Apparently I just missed you last night -- oops! ))

Specs smirked slightly. "You can just write your name down on the ledger... uh, you can write, right?" She looked more than capable. Then again, you never knew around here.

Birdie pressed her lips together at that, going a little pink. "Yes, well, I wasn't sure if I needed to speak to someone." She turned a little awkwardly back to the counter and picked up the pen beside the ledger.

"It's alright," smiled Specs reassuringly as he walked towards her. "Kloppman's usually the guy we go to but he's hardly ever around, so we just sign our names and make sure we pay."

Carefully, she set her violin case down on the floor by her feet and then wrote her name neatly on a free line in the book. "So you all mostly look after yourselves?" she asked as she scrawled the date next to her name.

Specs nodded, shrugging. "Yeah, pretty much," he answered, noticing the violin case she was holding. "Are you a newsie?"

Birdie set the pen down and looked over at him with a little smile. "Um, as of today, I am." She paused and shifted her shoulders. "Or I will be, I suppose, once I actually sell a paper."

"What job did you have before, then?" he asked curiously.

"I was playing in Central Park," she told him as she picked up her case. "I just met Ershey today, and she told me about this place."

"Well, if you're going to sell, you can't take that with you," he said, motioning towards her violin case. "Unless you're going to play. You used to carrying that around?"

She looked down at the case and frowned. "Oh, um...I don't really like to leave it places." She looked up at him. "You don't think I can take it with me?"
