Eli stared at the blank white page as he bit the tip of his pencil. He was so close to finishing up his second play. His first one that he had written was such a success- well, for what it could be anyway- that it was putting a lot of pressure on him to write another which was just as good. Not to mention that his earnings from the last one were practically gone, what with the new flat that they had purchased and Duncan getting older.
He needed money. Soon. And fast.
Groaning, Eli began to bang his head against his desk. He hated all this responsibility. All the pressure. He thought about his old self, what the younger version of him woulda done- woulda skipped town for a few weeks, jumping from freight train to freight train, and let the wind and the air deal him the cards.
Now he had mouths to feed and rent to pay.

Trixie was in the nursery with Duncan, who wasn't even a year and a half old and already waddling drunkenly around the apartment. He was babbling incessantly, which entertained her, especially when he managed words like 'Mama.'
As far as Trixie was concerned, Duncan was her absolute greatest achievement. But Eli hadn't been as excited lately as he was in the beginning. She clapped and cheered when Duncan managed to stack a block onto of another, and he beamed and giggled, stumbling into her arms where she sat on the floor.

Eli heard Duncan laughing, which was completely distracting. All he wanted to do was play with him, but the kid would end up starving if he didn't at least write something tonight.
He sighed loudly, picking up his coffee cup and leaving his study, walking past his room on the way. "If only I had a million dollars, kid," Eli muttered, setting down his empty mug on the changing table and stealing Duncan up in his arms, delivering about 9 kisses on his face and the last one on his belly, blowing a raspberry and getting Duncan to cackle wildly in laughs.

Trixie smiled, leaning back against the wall and stretching her legs out in front of her. "He misses you, ya know. I do, too."

"I'm here!" Eli insisted, throwing Duncan in the air and catching him. "Every Papa's gotta go to work. Our situation is a bit different, but its all the same." Duncan responded by grabbing a wad of Eli's hair.

Trixie smiled, patting the spot on the floor beside her for Eli to sit with her. "I know. And we understand that. It's just hard knowing that you're right there in the next room and we can't be with you."

Eli plopped down next to her, struggling to get Duncan to let go of his hair. "Owwwww. Let go Big D!" But Duncan held on, giggling at all the funny "ow" faces his daddy was making.

Trixie giggled and reached a hand up, gently prying Duncan's fingers away from Eli's hair. "Be nice, pumpkin. Don't hurt Daddy."
Duncan giggled, then clapped his hand. "Mama."

Eli rubbed his eyes with his hands, sighing heavily. "What are we gonna do, Trix? My writer's block has become my new nemesis. I've always thought a million things at once. Ideas come to me naturally. Now all that is in my head is a faint whistling. WHISTLING!" His face suddenly lit up, and he beamed at Duncan.
"I haven't taught you to whistle yet! Now, repeat after me-" He whistled the first three notes of the National Anthem.

Duncan only gurgled, shoving his hand into his mouth.
Trixie smoothed down Eli's hair, kissing his temple. "It'll come to ya. Ya just need a little inspiration or something." She bit her lip. "You--you can go, ya know. Away a while. If it'll help." She didn't want him to, though. Not at all. But Eli had always needed freedom.

"Yeah, maybe I'll go to Luke's. Have a beer with him or something." Eli thought out loud, with a sigh. He grabbed Duncan and pulled him into his lap, cuddling him close. "Trix I'm real worried. The play I'm working on now is shi- I mean dog poop. I might have to go back to construction. But the way the market is, they'll throw me up into building one of 'em skyscrapers."

She bit her lip. She didn't want him doing that, not by a long shot. "You'll figure it out, Eli. Ya always do. And--" she stopped, figuring now might not be the best time to tell him. "And it'll be fine..."

"I mean, I know ya don't want back in the biz, but ya got a lot of cred after staring in my play. You can always audition for a few roles." Eli pointed out. But not burlesque. Or vaudeville. But Eli kept his mouth shut on those.

Well, damn. She'd have to tell him now. She looked down at Duncan, brushing her finger over his soft, chubby cheek. "Wouldn't be any good to them in a few months..."

Eli didn't get it. "Why?" He scooped up one of Duncan's toys, and realized it was the purple teddy he won for Trixie on their first date. He smiled and handed it to Duncan.
