"And...your boyfriend? The Tyler guy Bryce was yappin about?" Eli asked, cracking the window. It was odd to him that her parents weren't more on top of her. Whenever he had a stuffy nose his mother practically shoved cold medicine down his throat.

She shrugged. "I didn't leave school until I started losing my hair. Before that I had doctor's appointments all the time and I'd lie about them. Tyler thought I was cheating on him, so he broke up with me." She sighed. "Do you mind if we have lunch at my house?"

She glanced at him. "My parents didn't want anybody to know. So I kept my mouth shut." She finally pulled into her driveway, but just sat in the car when she'd parked it, not getting out right away.

She smirked over at him. "Seriously? You'll give up pot so I quit smoking? My doctor's gonna love you." She got out of the car finally, letting them inside, scooping up Pookie as he ran to her.

She shrugged. "They were there, sometimes. Nora went to most of my appointments with me. Especially once I started getting better." She said it like it didn't upset her -- she was too used to it. "You hungry? Nora made cheesy chicken casserole earlier."

She moved to put the casserole in the oven. "I dunno. I guess we kept missing each other. Plus, my parents paid for at home care." She moved to sit beside him while the casserole heated. "I know you think I'm crazy, but people at school...it's not like they would have cared anyway."
