It had been a week. A week since Erin had broken his heart and stomped on it, leaving David broken and pathetic in a crying, blubbering mess.
And a week since David had made himself a permanent fixture at the bar in Irving Hall. When he went home -- if he went home -- he was drunk and sloppy, crawling into bed late into the night and refusing to get up for school.
When his parents wouldn't leave him alone, he stopped going home all together, instead sleeping in the Hall, in a room with a few young stage hands.
Now, he sat at the bar, his usual stool at the very end, tucked next to the wall, already into his third -- or was it fourth? -- whiskey, willing his brain to turn to mush so he could dull the pain of losing everything he'd ever wanted.

Jack wandered into the bar and saw David by the bar which confused him. He walked over to him. "hey Davey."

David turned his head and looked at Jack with sad eyes and half-blurry vision. "Hey, Jack. Haven't seen you in a while."

"yeah...you alright?" he asked him ordering a beer.

David snorted out a rueful laugh. "Nope." He took a swig of his drink. "Pretty sure I'd be better off dead."

Jack raised an eyebrow at him, he took a sip of his beer, "you wanna talk about it?"

He did. But he was sad and embarrassed and depressed. And would probably cry. "I got Zippy pregnant."

"wow," Jack said and then gulped down the rest of his beer. "hey, it's not the worst thing that coulda happened, David."

David frowned down at his now empty glass, gesturing at the bartender to refill it once again. "She's getting an abortion."

Jack just stared at him for a long time and then nodded, he motioned for another beer. "and you wanted to get married and have a family?"

David felt tears sting the corners of his eyes, but he sniffed them back and took a gulp of the liquor in front of him. "Yeah. Yeah, I did."

"Cause you're a good guy, David." Jack said with a sigh. "I dunno how to help you...I''ve never had this problem."

He shook his head. "Don't. Just don't ever. Don't fall in love, don't let some girl get under your skin. 'Cause she's just gonna rip your heart out and stomp on it."

"That's terrible advice, David." Jack said to him. "I thought you were the smart one." He smirked and then sighed heavily. "Kids aren't a joke, they need to be taken care of or they end up like all the ones in the lodging house, like me."

He frowned darkly, glancing at him. "I wouldn't have let that happen, you know that. And if she really loved me, she'd know I'd take care of her. Of them."
