He let out a little laugh in return. "It ain't the manliest name in the world, but it gets me lots of free dessert at Tibby's."

"Hey, now that's not too bad of a deal," Rose pointed out, smirking.

"Not too bad?" Pie lifted his eyebrows. "I'd go by 'meatloaf' if it meant getting it for free."

Rose laughed at that, hugging her book to her chest. "I guess I wouldn't mind going by 'Whiskey,' but since that's what I call my boyfriend, it could get confusing..."

Pie shook his head, folding his arms over his chest. "Nah, that wouldn't do." He looked her over again, thinking. "I'll come up with somethin', don't worry."

"No, that's all right. I don't think I'll be staying here much longer anyway..." She hadn't been planning on telling anyone that, especially not a guy she had just met. No one besides Tyler really cared, anyway. But now it just slipped out.

"That's a shame," Pie told her sincerely. Clearly, she was someone else's girl, and Pie was the last person on earth to want to get between that, but he liked this Rose. She was funny, and she liked his ma's cookies. She seemed like a good friend to have. "I guess I'll have to come up with somethin' quick, then, unless you change your mind."

Rose studied him a bit, her gaze penetrating. "Well, come on then. And don't say 'Curly.' That's lame."

Pie took a step toward her with a scrutinizing frown. What did she remind him of? He could see Whiskey, certainly -- the bits of red in her hair, the fire in the way she looked at things. But the burn in her gaze was slower, more intense than that quick flash of rye whiskey.
"Bourbon," he said finally, frowning at her. After a moment, realizing how ridiculous he was being, he shook his head and laughed a little shortly. "Nah, that's worse than 'Curly.' I don't know, kid, somebody else should come up with a name for you."

"Nice try, Cookie," she said with a smirk. "I don't usually drink bourbon, but maybe I could give it a try."

"You should," he told her. "The taste is better than with plain whiskey." Pie lifted his eyebrows at her and folded his arms again. "I think I'm gonna call you Bourbon just to spite you."

"Well, I'll keep calling you Cookie even though it sounds like a pet name," she responded firmly, trying to keep the smirk off her face.

"Not any worse than Pie," he answered. "But I guess that's a deal." He held his hand out to her to shake, the corner of his mouth twitching.

Rose shook his hand, making sure her grip was firm. Then she burst out laughing.

Pie bit down on the inside of his cheek to try to hold it in, but he couldn't help himself. He started to laugh as well, trying his damnedest to stop.
