Rose nodded, letting out a small sigh of relief that he wasn't pushing it. "That's right, it's not." She studied him for a moment before opening her book.

Pie continued to watch her as she opened the book back up. After a moment, he spoke up again. "My ma used to tan my sister's hide when she caught her with books like that."

"The usual Ma stuff -- told us we were livin' like pigs in a sty, made poor Itey wash the windows, kicked out a couple a' girls who'd snuck in." Pie laughed again under his breath. "But then she cooked everybody dinner, and she was forgiven."
