Mary Anne eyed her a moment before checking on the cornbread in the oven. "And how d'ya feel about it?"

"Well, I have to say I'm really glad he does...because I'm in love with him, too," she said, hoping her nerves didn't poke through into her voice.

She looked at her a long while before saying, "He says he's marryin' you."

"Yes ma'am," she agreed, nodding. "Asked me plenty of times, too. But my grandma... Well... My family situation is really complicated."

She put the country ham on a plate, putting the plate on the table. "Well, d'ya wanna marry my son, Rose?"

"Yes, ma'am," she repeated, with no hesitation. And while Rose wasn't really one to talk too much about her feelings, she forced herself to now. "Your son is the best person I've ever met. I know I don't deserve him, but since I'm lucky enough to have him, I won't ever let him go."

She nodded, moving to sit beside her at the table. "Rose, I don't know what family problems ya might be havin'. But if you're happy with each other, then what's stoppin' you, really."

Rose sighed, looking down at her lap, her hands fidgeting nervously. "Mrs. McGowan, I had to grow up fast. Before any girl should be forced to. But now that I have Tyler and things are getting resolved with my family, I guess... Well, I guess I just feel like I want to be young. While I still can be."

She nodded, understanding. "Sweetheart, you are young. Bein' married doesn't change that, not until ya have babies of yer own. But if you wanna wait...ya need to explain this to Tyler."

She nodded, still staring down at her hands. "I know," she replied, her voice just above a whisper.

She reached out and touched her shoulder. "Rose, you listen to me. I have never in all my days seen Tyler as happy as when he introduced me to you. That boy loves ya, and he'll marry ya now or 10 years from now or anywhere in between."

"But he wants to now," she said, glancing up at Mary Anne, a small smirk on her lips.

She chuckled. "Tyler never was a patient boy. He was always real decisive. Once he know what he wants, he goes and gets it."

"Oh, I noticed," Rose replied, nodding and trying not to laugh.

She laughed openly, patting her hand, then stood up to finish the cooking just as Tyler walked back in with an older man who looked just like him.
"Rosie! This is my daddy, Andrew."
Andrew smiled at her. "I'd hug ya, dear, but I'm a mess. Lemme just go get changed."
