((I took this from a line in my favorite show, Skins. Effy/Freddie remind me somewhat of Sapphy/Race.))
It was a couple of days after Copper confronted Race after his dance with Sapphy. The weekend had been busy with heavy Sunday editions, and everyone sneaking off to do rather secretive, personal things.
Sapphy had been playing with Copper, and Race had been keeping his distance. After a few days of making up for lost time with her brother, she remembered that sometimes she couldn't stand him and had been missing Race's presence anyway.
So she had walked into the boys' bunkroom that morning after Kloppman roused the girls but before he roused the boys. Sapphy yanked Race's blankets off with a smile.
"You and I are going on an adventure today," she greeted.

"Mmbhjnhh?" Race muttered, grabbing for the covers. He missed, knocked an unlit candle off the nightstand, finally found a cigar, and had it lit and smoking before he finally opened his eyes to squint at Sapphy. Another drag or two and his eyes were all the way open and actually seemed to recognize her. "Uh...right now?"

"Yes."

Race looked at her with wide eyes. "Can I get dressed first? Or is this a shirtless adventure?" he whispered. He heard some incoherent grumbling in the bunk above him that could only be Blink, who had probably been half-woken from a joyful dream of the mayor's daughter.

Sapphy looked down at him, just now taking in his state of undress.
"Shirtless Race could be fun, but we'll have that adventure another day," she whispered, trying to be more quiet than her initial entrance. "Come on. Get dressed. We're starting at the races."

"Oh!" Race bounded out of bed and vanished into the washroom before he even registered her comment about how they'd "have that adventure another day." When it did register, it made him think of everything Copper had said, which made his mood plummet, so he shoved it to the back of his mind, because...races!
He was showered and dressed inside of ten minutes, and came back out to grab his hat and today's tip sheet. At that moment, Kloppman came in, broom upraised, and looked positively shocked to find Race already up and chipper. Race just smirked at him and turned to Sapphy. "Let's go!"

Sapphy was tying her hair up in a kerchief as Race and her bounded down the stairs. She felt propelled forward by an unknown force. She was unable to sleep all night and in the morning she just had to see Racetrack's face.
She didn't notice her heart beating a little faster as she turned to him and asked, "What's the latest headline in Racetrack's World?"

He considered that. "I talked to your brother and we didn't kill each other. So that was...good, I guess? Then I spent a couple days in Brooklyn. Spot's back, and him and Rae are together again...those two crazy kids." He shook his head. "How 'bout Sapphy's World?"
((Just finished watching the video, and...awww!))

"Kevin and I have been together most of the time," Sapphy beamed. "I'd elaborate, but it was all rather 'you had to be there' stories."

"I can imagine," said Race dryly. He was still utterly bemused by the connection between Sapphy and Copper, but at least it made her happy. "So where is he today? And why the urge to catch an early-morning race? Not that I'm complaining."

"He's sleeping," she said, before catching herself on this next part. "I just... I missed you, was all."

"Oh." Race glanced at her, then looked fixedly at the tip sheet, although for once, the horses' names and stats looked like gibberish. "I missed you too," he admitted, even though part of him thought it would be best to laugh it off and point out that it had only been a few days. Don't ask me out, Sapphy. Find a way to ask me out a week ago, when I would've known exactly how to answer.

Sapphy's shoulders slightly rolled back at that response. She tried to bite a smile back, but she couldn't contain it.
"I know," she said mockingly, trying to move past the knots beginning to form in her stomach. Right now, she wasn't scared. She wasn't trying to hide away from people, Race particularly. She wasn't locking anything up or ignoring her heart.
"Who's your first horse?" she asked distractedly.
((Off to bed, my dear. We'll maybe continue this when I wake up in a few hours haha.))

((Indeed! Sleep well! ) He made a face at her, reverting to the maturity level he normally displayed with Blink and Mush, and made an attempt to analyze the tip sheet for real. "Prob'ly Procaccini's Pride. Long odds, but only 'cause he took a spill in the last race. He took a long break, should be healed up by now. 'Sides, he's Italian-bred."

"And those Italians, they're persistant," Sapphy grinned, taking a seat in the stands.
