Kennedy was right about Sapphy's destination. Sapphy has ran into a nice boy named Freddy and he currently had his arm around her waist and was leading the way to O'Reagan's to buy her the drink he promised. "So you're next in line for Brooklyn?" Okay, so he fibbed a little. "Basically, yes," he grinned at her, pulling her a little closer. "Impressive," she smiled softly, allowing herself to be pulled closer. She bit her lower lip, giving Freddy a signal to go ahead and kiss her. Their faces were already so close together... ((Basically I borrowed Freddy because I'm watching Skins right now and my favorite character is named Freddy played by the yummy Luke Pasqualino -- thought I'd live vicariously through this thread.)) ((Haha! Very nice.))
Race came out of O'Reagan's, walking rapidly, wanting to (a.) get the hell away from Spot and (b.) find Sapphy and somehow convince her life was still worth living, but he was only partway down the street before he spotted...Sapphy and some guy coming around the corner, obviously on the verge of kissing. He supposed it was too late to run in some other direction and pretend he hadn't seen them.
Race was starting to believe that his life lately was just one very long bad day.

Freddy saw Race out of the corner of his eye. Not wanting to kiss in front of him -- because Freddy was actually a very decent guy -- he turned to him with a grin.
"Heya Race, whatcha doing in Brooklyn?"
Sapphy's eyes widened.

((Hahaha, poor Freddy.))
Race's jaw dropped when he realized who it was. Good old Freddy, who'd stayed up all night helping him sort out Brooklyn a few months ago. Which made Race feel kind of bad about his urge to punch him in the face.
He closed his mouth, opened it again, and finally said, "Trying to deal with Spot. Tristan took over. You might wanna give him a hand." He jerked his thumb in the direction of O'Reagan's, swallowed, and added as casually as he could possibly manage, "Hey, Sapphy."

"You two know each other?" Freddy smiled, looking between them.
"Yeah, old friends -- go way back, practically to another time." Sapphy did not like how Race was looking at her, something was wrong...

"To the Stone Age," Race agreed faintly. "Actually, I just ran into our mutual friend, Kennedy, who is also in O'Reagan's, which seems to be where everyone is going tonight, and...she said you needed to talk to me about something," he said to Sapphy.

Sapphy frowned, confused but figuring it was something best left to talking in private. She turned to Freddy with a smile.
"I'll meet you inside," she said softly before kissing his cheek.
Freddy grinned, pleased and headed into the pub.

As soon as Freddy was gone, Race's face got quite a bit grimmer. "All right, she didn't say you needed to talk to me about anything. She said to keep you away from medicine cabinets 'cause you swallowed a bunch of pills once. Sapphy, what the hell is going on?"

Sapphy recoiled back, looking like she'd been slapped. Fucking Kennedy.
"None of your damn business," she said, moving to go around Race and into the pub.

He said the only thing he could think of that might get her attention. "You could at least think about your family."

Sapphy stilled. That instilled a Level 2 on the Sapphy Anger Scale. She spun on her heel and went nose to nose with Racetrack.
"You think my family thinks about me? You think they think anything at all anymore? Fuck you."

"From what you've told me, you don't know why you ain't been hearing from them, so I think there's a damn good chance they're still out there and still care. And if you just assume they're gone and decide you should be, too, you're making the biggest fucking mistake a person can make. 'Course, I don't even know if that's what's really going on because apparently it's none of my business."

Sapphy glared at him.
"You think my family makes a difference? You think I'm sad only over them? I wish I KNEW why I was sad all the time, Race! I've been sad since I was ten, when I lived with my family. And it's none of your business, or anyone's business, cause I'd rather people not try to institutionalize me again, thanks."

A vague memory stirred in Race's head--an alcohol-tinged memory from a night whose later events had all but wiped it from his mind. I said something in Italian, that she was out of her mind, and she yelled at me...
"I'm not trying to lock you up, Sapph, I'm trying to talk to you. I'm sorry you've been sad for so long. I don't know why or how to fix it. But I can think of plenty of times I've seen you happy, or at least you seemed that way, and that's gotta be worth something. Are you really gonna yell at me because I don't want you to die?"

"...Yes!" Sapphy looked confused though. Her mood was always bouncing back and forth and it was exhausting. "My mood is always bouncing back and forth and it's exhausting, Race! I can't control it and I don't know why!"
She clutched her forehead, head throbbing.
"The night I met Kennedy -- that was my, what, eighth attempt since I was thirteen? But I always fuck it up. There's always someone close that I don't take in account or I push the blade down hard but only half a centimeter not hard enough. Fuck, I can't even kill myself right -- I just want it stop. I just want to rest. I just want to be put in the ground and stay there! My thoughts never fucking let me just rest!"
