"I'll keep that in mind," he said, slightly terrified. The betting came around to him again, and he raised the pot a whole dollar. All around the table, newsies broke their poker faces and groaned. Race maintained his but snickered inwardly, knowing they would start dropping like flies. And he even had a halfway decent hand to back it up.

Sapphy shot a grin over to Race.
"I'm so proud of you," she commented, suppressing her laughter over the others' dismay.

Tristan decided that he would definitely hold out. he wasn't letting Racetrack Higgins get the best of him this game. He matched Race's bet.

"Hope you have reason," Race murmured to Sapphy, eyeing Tristan. He figured Tris was probably staying in for pride's sake rather than the quality of his hand, but you never knew. He eyed his own cards and waited for the last couple fellows to call or fold.

"Alright Racetrack whatcha got?" Tristan asked with a grin. He was praying to God he might actually have a chance.

Sapphy gently took a small hold of Race's sleeve at his elbow with one hand and crossed her fingers for luck with the other.

He flashed Sapphy a grateful smile--would have liked to squeeze her hand, in fact, but he didn't know how she'd react to that--and spread out his cards in front of him: four of a kind.

"God damn it!" Tristan exclaimed and tossed down his cards. "Every time!"

Race grinned and patted Tristan on the shoulder. "I really almost thought you had me for a second there." He motioned to a tiny newsie in the corner, who made a few marks in a dusty record book--Spot would make sure everyone settled up before they left tonight.
"Plenty more rounds to go," Race added so his friend maybe wouldn't hate him for the rest of the night. "Think I'll take a cigar break, though." He looked at Sapphy, wondering whether she would seize this opportunity to interrogate him, and telling himself he was totally ready.

"Just stay out of the line of fire," Tristan said, nodding toward the fighting Raven and Spot.

Race's eyes went wide as he followed Tristan's gaze. He'd been so intent on the game and Sapphy, he hadn't even noticed. "I'll do that," he promised, making a mental note to ask Rae about it later. It looked more intense than your run-of-the-mill Spot-and-Raven fight.
And hopefully, it wasn't what he and Sapphy would look like in a few minutes. Don't be stupid. She don't care about you enough to fight like that.

((I'll start a new thread for us, Em. They can interrogate and do the cute little drink idea I had there.))
