Sapphy arrived at Irving Hall an hour before anyone else -- she wanted to see if Stagey were coming to the game. She was already dressed up and ready and prepared to sweet-talk Stagey downstairs if absolutely needed.
She went to Stagey's room and knocked on the door. "Hello? It's Sapphy."

Stagey was bent over her tattered journal, pencil scribbling as quickly as the thoughts came to her.
He kissed me. My dreams, waking and nighttime, never really built up to how wonderful it could really feel. I'm happy and scared all at the same time. I know things have changed now because of it... is it all for the good? I'm afraid that--
The knock at the door startled her from her focused journaling, enough that she let out a brief yelp of surprise before composing herself. "Come in, Sapphy," she stammered, closing her journal instantly.

Sapphy poked her head in and smiled at Stagey.
"Am I intruding?" she asked.

"Hmm? Oh, no, no." She offered her a sheepish smile, indicating her little journal. "I just get a little distracted when I'm writing in my diary. In my own little world." She motioned for her to come in, patting a spot next to her. If she ever trusted any of the newsgirls with tales of Jack and all his confusing behavior, she trusted Sapphy.

"Yes, I get like that whenever I'm alone and reading. Or whenever I'm just alone," Sapphy said, closing the door behind her. "Either I'm terribly focused or unfocused -- I cannot tell."

"I'm a little bit of both," she admitted, her cheeks burning suddenly. Then, as if the words bubbled out of her without her permission, she let it out: "Something happened." Gulping, she felt obligated to elaborate. "With Jack.. And me."

"Shut. Up." Sapphy sat down, cross-legged and eager at Stagey's feet. It was story time!!

She hesitated, not entirely sure of herself. Stagey was never good at talking about herself - this was no exception. "We kissed," she said simply with a sheepish slump. "And now... I don't know."

"Set the scene," Sapphy insisted. She hugged her knees to her chest.

"I was baking a cake." It sounded so utterly un-scandalous when she said it aloud. "Jack must have smelled the cooking - the kitchen's not used so much, you know - and we started talking, and then it got to the subject of taking chances, having dreams, and the next thing I knew..."
She cast Sapphy a sideways, helpless look. "I should be dancing, but all I am is more confused."

"Why are you confused?" Sapphy asked, leaning forward. "What did he say?"

"Nothing bad," she admitted, shrugging a little, finding herself leaning forward. "But... nothing promising, either. I think he likes me - at least enough to kiss me - but he said he didn't want to start anything. Take things slow and all that."
In a rare moment of letting her hair down, Stagey leaned backwards onto her bed, sighing defeatedly. "Did he just not want to hurt my feelings?" Maybe since Sapphy lived amongst the rowdy newsboys, she had a better light to shed on all of this.

"No. I think he's a young boy who doesn't want to get ahead of himself," Sapphy said, standing up to sit on the edge of Stagey's bed. She looked down at her. "He wants to respect you while at the same time... He's a boy. Lots of 'em don't fall in love and want kids and stay in New York for a girl like that," she snapped her fingers.
"No offense to you, it's just how the male of the species -- and some women, too, of course -- are wired. Everyone's self-centered to some extent. You just gotta be patient with him. Don't put too much stock in it, and have fun."

"It isn't like I want to marry him," she insisted, her cheeks feeling very pink as she spoke the words. "Maybe someday. But I don't know what I want either... except that I want to be a part of his life." It was all such sappy drivel.
"You've got to help me," she suddenly decided, looking up at Sapphy with a pathetic glance. "Help me do all the right things a girl should do for a fella she likes. You know, so I don't scare him away."

Sapphy let out an uproar of a laugh.
"You think I'd know?! Stagey! I know how to be a floozy and get things that I want in that moment. I'm pathetic at relationships... Just be yourself."
