A bright smile found Tag's lips as she nodded. She was glad she wasn't going to lose neither Specs nor Leo as friends, though she was a bit worried that both of them still liked her that way... And she still was too confused to choose...
"So, tell me the truth. Have you actually read any of it?" She asked, gesturing to his book.

"I, uh..." started Specs, unsure of what to say. Truthfully, he hadn't gotten around to reading the book. It reminded him of Tag and he was too furious to think about her that he avoided it altogether.
"I just read the first couple sentences?"

Tag just giggled.
"You don't have to read it, you know. I won't be offended! You can go back to the library and check out a book on war or... tools." What did boys like? Tag really didn't know.

Specs couldn't help but laugh. "Yes, tools," he grinned, shaking his head at her. He was glad to finally spend time with her, especially without the tension and the awkwardness. He opened his mouth to say something else but suddenly noticed the cat at her feet.
"Hey, uh, where'd that come from?" he asked in confusion, gesturing towards the cat.

"Oh, Lizzie!" Tag picked her up and gave her a slight squeeze.
"It's kind of a long story, but Goblin gave her to me." She beamed, ever much the proud mama.

"So she's yours?" he asked, moving over to sit next to her. He pet the cat gently, completely amused. He was more of a dog person but this wasn't too bad either.

"Yep. Honestly, I've always wanted a dog, but a cat's much better than having no pet at all."
Tag's heart sped up a bit now that Specs was closer to her, and she hoped she could remember to breathe properly.

"Me too," he smiled, keeping his eyes on the cat to avoid looking directly at Tag. He still had feelings for her but he wasn't about to push her especially after the incident at Irving Hall. He decided to just be there for her, win her over by being the best friend she could have.
"Dogs are fun but this cat's really friendly... Lizzie, you said? How'd you get that name?"

Tag couldn't help but laugh.
"Well, if you'd actually read some of that book you've got, you'd know that the heroine is called Lizzie."

"Oh," said Specs quietly, feeling his cheeks burn. "I'll, uh, get to that. I'll read it, I swear! Might even give me some insight on how girls think." He winked, teasing her.

Tag blushed, though she was still smiling quite widely. And she realized she would not get any reading done right now.
"I hope you don't mind me changing the subject, but... I would really like to know more about you. Like... your family?"

"My family?" repeated Specs, a bit taken aback by her question. "I, uh... they're in California." And don't know that he's a newsie at all.

"Is that where you're from?" She asked, her eyes widening a bit. California always seemed so exotic. She'd always wondered what it was like there.

Specs nodded, petting Lizzie as she purred. "Out west," he said, chuckling softly. "It's incredibly different... not too crowded, hot and everyone's out workin' on something."

"Oh, wow. I'd love to go there." Tag wondered what it was like to live in somewhere other than a big city.
"So, if your family is there, why are you here?" Not that she was complaining.
