"I wasn't much of a hard worker... I mean, in the physical sense," said Specs, correcting himself immediately. "I'd rather study and read books... so I went here to do that. Sort of."
Right. He was here in New York selling papers and running to the library whenever he could. So much for an education.

"So, you're in school?" He hadn't said anything about him being in school. He'd been interested in her going to school, but he hadn't said he was a student.

"No," said Specs quietly, refusing to look at her directly. Thank God Lizzie was here. "I want to... but my family's always short of money. I felt guilty. So I just send back the money they gave me. They think it's from work... well, I guess if you count the money I make here, but... I just felt too selfish."

Specs shrugged, sighing. "It's too difficult. Y'see, I'm the oldest of the family... and they expect too much. I've got tons of little siblings looking up to me. It'd just be too much trouble. It's easier this way... I'll just send 'em money when I can... get a good job, if ever."

Tag felt sorry for Specs, but she didn't want to tell him that. She found people usually didn't take too kindly to you feeling sorry for them.
Instead, she just lightly rested her hand on his shoulder blade. "I'm sure you'll find one."

He felt his heart beat faster and his cheeks burn slightly. He hated telling people about his family but it was just too easy to talk to Tag. Granted, she probably pitied him right now but Specs was relieved that he could be honest with someone.
"I don't think being a newsie really counts," he joked lightly, looking over at her. "But my family's fun... they're not like me. They're loud and in each other's faces... they'll like you if they know you."

"Really? Hiding in the library and reading books with me is fun?" he said in amazement. It wasn't an ordinary past time for most newsgirls to do and Specs was still in awe with Tag's intelligence. It just made her more attractive to him than most girls he saw on the street.

"Yes, and yes. She's the first newsie to talk to me when I got here about a year ago. And we've been best friends ever since. She's very...well, loud."
Tag frequently thought back to those weeks when Zippy had shown her the ropes and taken her under her wing. She'd be forever grateful to her best friend for that.

"I'm guessing that's a good loud since you two are pretty close?" said Specs. Tag never struck him as the loud type but, then again, it was tough to find a good friend around here nowadays.

Specs nodded, listening to Tag. He continued playing with Lizzie, amused at how the cat was so friendly with him.
"Hey Tag, uh, if you don't mind me askin'... you think I can make up for that time at Irving Hall? Y'know, do something where you're happy at the end and not crying?" He wanted so much to spend time with her, even as friends. Of course. Just friends.

Tag blushed, still extremely embarrassed at all the waterworks.
"Yes, of course, if that's what you'd like." She wouldn't say no to spending time with Specs. As friends, of course. That's all she needed at the moment, more friends. Nothing more.

"As long as you're willing," he said, smiling at her. "Now last time I chose what to do, it didn't end too well. Is there anything you'd like to do in the city? Something you've always wanted to do?"
Specs was going to give her complete control. He didn't want to screw this one up, even if it wasn't a real date.
