Macbeth had curled up in an armchair by a crackling fire on the first cold, rainy night of the year. She was reading Poe, her blood deliciously chilled by his tales of mystery and horror. There seemed to be no one else around--all playing cards up in the bunkrooms, perhaps--and it was the closest she'd come to contentment since moving in.

Sapphy tripped on the stairs, but regained her balance. Trying to read in the dark, especially while walking down some steps, was a rather stupid idea.
She was almost done with Wuthering Heights and had the London-stolen Dickens book under her arm, ready to start as soon as she finished the final chapter.

Beth started at the scuffling sound on the stairs, half-expecting a rotting corpse to come staggering toward her. Then she felt another kind of dread--the kind she felt any time she ran into anyone who wasn't a friend, because it always, always went south. And then she lifted her lamp off the table to illuminate the figure and saw that it was Sapphy.
"Hey," she said warily--and a bit sheepishly, remembering how their last encounter ended. "Two books at once. Thought I was the only one."

"Heathcliff is about to get corpse-ified," she said, holding up the title for Macbeth to see. She sat in the chair opposite of her. "Whatcha got now?"

"Heathcliff's a bloody monster. Don't know how she could've loved him," she muttered, showing Sapphy her own book. "Thought it was a Poe kinda night."

"I think he and Cathy deserve each other," Sapphy smirked. "Which story or poem are you on?"

"'The Fall of the House of Usher.' There's some subtext going on here that I don't even wanna look too closely at." She gave Sapphy a narrow-eyed glance, then stared pensively into the fire. "Thanks for that whole rant at Tibby's," she blurted out. "I didn't really see that coming. Since I'd just thrown down with your friend and all."

Sapphy blinked at her Macbeth, surprised. She honestly didn't expect her to speak up.
"Hey, rumor has it I'm a bad friend anyway for not wanting to jump in on cat fights -- figured I'd give some truth to the rumors." She looked up at Macbeth, dropping the sarcasm. "You probably already know this, but I'll say it for good measure -- you might piss off the wrong person someday."

Beth had to laugh at that. "Oh, it's happened. And it'll happen again. But I'll always survive it, that's my one shining talent." She sounded unduly bitter about that fact.

"Still though," Sapphy smiled at her, shrugging. She didn't really know how to follow that up.

Beth shrugged back and turned to her. "So who are you, anyway? Tell me things, if we're gonna have this little bonding moment." She smiled slightly, just to soften the sarcasm a little.

"I'm Sapphy... I like books, fighting when it actually amounts to something, and saving girls? Or saving them poorly?" She reconsidered. "If you wanna know something more real, you have to ask because I'm terrible at introducing myself."

She chuckled. "I try to save people sometimes too. Always poorly. Believe it or not, I've gotten more shiners for that than anything else."
She contemplated what she might ask, what piece of information would be "real" to her. "You got many friends 'round here?" Macbeth was big on friends. It took a very special kind of person to dig persistently through her prickly layers, to find and come to care for the real Elizabeth Rowlands. When they did, Beth was impressed and loyal to a fault.

Sapphy shrugged.
"I like everyone here. I'm on good terms with everyone here -- maybe not one boy, but that's my own fault. Lately, though, I've been just keeping to myself, my brother, and my man. There's no drama in our little trifecta, and I'm rather tired of drama. I read the paper everyday. No news is good news."

((No drama between Race and Copper? That's an optimistic viewpoint, haha.))
She nodded thoughtfully, then glanced at Sapphy. Gave her a good, long look. Put two and two together. "You've got a brother here? I, uh...think I may have...met him." She cleared her throat and stared down at her book.
