"Your parents don't like them?" asked Risk, trying to better understand the whole situation. He initially thought that Wraith and Goblin were from money when Tara mentioned that they were childhood friends. Maybe not.

"Not enough to take them in. Their family wasn't quite the same rank as ours, and anyway...when people like us or the Pearsons have problems, no one's supposed to acknowledge them," she explained. "You just keep putting on a good face in public and pretending like everything's fine. When someone else's children show up on your doorstep with bruises, you have to admit that everything isn't fine. It spoils the game," she said scathingly, shaking the butterfly net for emphasis. She paused, flushing a bit. "Sorry...sometimes I rant."

"I figured," chuckled Risk, amused at her in depth explanation. She didn't seem too harmless. She was nice, actually, and it would seem that Wraith would be happy to see her. Then again, Risk being the meticulous cop that he was, he wanted to double check everything before following through.
"Huh, interestin'," he muttered. "I'll let you know if I hear about a Wraith around here. How would I find you? Should I follow some butterflies or somethin'? Swallowtail or whatever it is?"

She laughed and looked down at her butterfly. "No, this one won't live to see the morning. I'm taking it back to school and adding it to my collection. And that's where you can find me," she added. "Miss Porter's School for Girls, on the Upper West Side." She wrinkled her nose, then beamed at him. "You'll really look for her? You're not just saying that to make me go away? Because if you are, you can just say it right out. I'd quite understand."

Risk shrugged, smiling. "I'm sure I'll hear somethin'... everyone's always talkin' about somebody. You know how it is... er, I guess?"

"Gossip? Yeah, that's the same all over." She smiled, carefully set her net down on the ground, and hugged him, thereby breaking about a dozen rules of propriety. "Thanks so much! Everyone else I've asked was all cagey and protective, like I wanted to hurt her or something, which is ridiculous, because I'm really not that sinister..." She took a step back and gave him another kind of hopeful look. "...am I?"

"You're just... really energetic... and touchy," said Risk, his body tense from the unexpected hug.

"Sorry," she said again, picking up her net, butterfly and all. "I know I come on kind of strong. I suppose I should probably get to class." The very thought appeared to depress her.

"You've got class?" he said, raising an eyebrow at her. "Oh, wait, I keep on forgetting you're not a newsie..."

"Really? Thanks!" she said brightly as if he'd given her a compliment. "To tell you the truth, I'm not terribly studious. I come down with an awful lot of fevers, and I have such a nervous stomach, and sometimes I even swoon right in the middle of singing lessons. Ladies are very delicate, you know," she said, eyes dancing. She was the well-bred equivalent of a juvenile delinquent, and proud of it.

"Just the educated ones are," smirked Risk. "Well, except for you, of course."

Tara tossed her curls with a saucy grin. "You'd be surprised. I've met a few classy girls who are not as delicate as they look." Her eyes wandered to his stack of newspapers. It was still kind of large, considering the time of day. Her eyes widened as a brilliant idea struck her. "Hey, do you need help selling those?"

"Why, do you know how to sell?" asked Risk skeptically. "You're more of a newsie than I thought."

"Well, I get the general idea," she said. "Improving the headlines, right?" She looked at him pleadingly. "You don't understand. I've got mathematics right now. I can't go back, I can't. And selling papers looks like fun!"

"Okay, let's see what you can do," smirked Risk, handing her his papers.
