"Right," he muttered, quite confused by the exchange the two just had.

The minute the guy was gone, Macbeth spun on Risk. Her fists were clenched at her sides, every muscle tense. She wasn't just mad, she was shaken by the whole encounter. "What did he say to you? Who the hell is that guy?" she demanded, her voice barely under control.

Risk flinched by Macbeth's sudden change of behavior. He stared at her, taking a drag out of his cigarette before answering, "He basically told me not to mess with that Wraith kid... and to be careful. Actually, I'm pretty sure he was threatin' me. And how about you, huh? What was that conversation all about?"

"I don't even fucking know." She scooted closer, grabbed his cigarette out of his hand, took a drag, and handed it back. "Two people from Five Points running into each other, it ain't usually a happy reunion. He was prob'ly just one of Ada's johns...wanted to tell me how bloody good she was or something." Her hands were shaking. She wrapped her arms around herself and stared intently at the ground.

"Ada...? Your sister?" he asked. He was trying his best to keep up with the conversation and he could figure that much. Wasn't anyone around here an only child???

"Yeah, my sister. I didn't tell you when we were drunk?" Beth snorted. "She was a whore. An exotic whore, real famous in the Points. Half-Indian, with dark skin and all--well, you've seen Jo. She did some singing and dancing, too, but that was just a front." She hugged herself tighter, gazing vacantly into the distance. "Well, he must've fucked her. The hell do I care, anyway?"
Finally, she seemed to remember what Risk had said and turned to face him again. "So what was he threatening you for?"

Risk glanced at Macbeth, having a slight hunch that there was something more there. They wouldn't have awkwardly stared at each other if there was nothing going on. Then again, that happens a lot in this house.
"I don't know," he shrugged, flicking off his almost done cigarette. "He's just looking out for Wraith, I think?"

"The girl who found Ershey for you?" Beth frowned. "What'd you do to her?"

"Nothing, geez!" muttered Risk, throwing his hands up in the air. "Why does everyone think that?"
Well, technically, he didn't do anything to her. He negotiated with her.

Macbeth leaned close to him. "So if you didn't do nothing to her, what was that guy doing here?"

"I... had her help me if I did somethin' for her, alright?" answered Risk angrily. He was getting tired of people doubting him. Then again, he couldn't blame them.

"You wanted her to find Ershey," Macbeth surmised. "And what'd she want?" She had yet to figure out how this deal of his had earned him a visit from some giant thug from Five Points who had known Ada and, for some unknown reason, wanted to talk to her. She was almost scared, though she didn't quite know why. She was never scared, not of fights or beatings or even death, so why now?

Risk sighed. He wasn't about to tell her everything. At least, not now when things were kind of looking up.
"She wanted protection, alright?"
((Hmmm, people need to somehow find out Risk's secret!!))

((Well, Wraith told Tristan and might still tell Mush! And Beth's a pretty relentless interrogator. ^_^))
"Protection from what? And if you protected her, how come that guy came after you?" She was sitting an inch away from him now, hands balled into fists and resting on her knees--and with the pale skin, wild black hair, and cold black eyes, she was really rocking the angry-Gothic-rag-doll look. To the point where, if he didn't answer or tried to head for the stairs, she might very well pounce. And it wouldn't be pretty.

"'Cause he doesn't trust me!" yelled Risk, sighing. He stood up and started pacing back and forth. He hated how Macbeth was nagging him for more information. Being an undercover cop as a newsie is freaking hard.
"With my help, her and her brother won't end up in jail 'cause she helped me find Adri," he finally said, looking right at Macbeth.
