She stood up and moved to face him again, incidentally also standing between him and the stairs. "And how could you help with that?"

Risk stared back. "Because I can."

"Are you gonna make me guess?" she snapped. "'Cause I can find this guy again--hell, he'll prob'ly find me. Or I can find this Wraith girl. And I can ask them a lot of fucking questions and figure this out, or I can just tell Ershey that there's something shady going on with you, and you prob'ly ain't ever shed those bad connections you made as a kid." She looked him in the eye. "Or you can tell me what the hell's going on. Your choice."

Risk took a step forward, his eyes narrowed as he gave her a piercing glare. He was normally calm and carefree about everything, even his cop business but Macbeth was pushing him to the edge. "You're really askin' for it, aren't you?"

She smirked at him; this didn't scare her. "You wanna hit me, go right ahead. But unless you're gonna push me off the roof, I'm gonna get to the bottom of this. And even then..." She eyed the ground coolly and shrugged. "...I might just break an arm. Then where would you be?"

"I'm not goin' to hit you," sighed Risk, his shoulders falling. He couldn't stay mad at her for some reason. Dammit.
"Why do you wanna know so bad?"

She was actually surprised at that. With everything Ershey had told her, and his face a second ago, she'd thought she was finally about to meet the Hyde version of Risk. She'd been tensed for it and everything.
"Aside from the fact that you're Ershey's brother, and she gave you a second chance, and I let you hold my two-year-old niece?" She folded her arms. "'Cause I wanna know who the hell this guy is who wants to talk about Ada and fucking Five Points. Thought I put those ghosts to rest years ago." And she looked at him and waited, still half-steeled for an attack, wondering how this kid could possibly have yet another deep, dark secret, and one he was so desperate to protect.

"I don't know the guy, alright? I've never seen him before until now. So I don't know how your sister could possibly be connected with all of this," he explained.

Beth looked at him coldly. "Very good. You answered my last question. So how 'bout you? He came to see you. You got his friend and her brother outta trouble, and that made him suspicious. If you think I'm gonna get distracted now, forget it. Forget my sister, forget the guy from Five Points. What the hell are you involved in?"

"I'm not involved in anything! I'm here," he said, shaking his head. "I'm here to figure things out."
Eh, close enough.

At this point, her expression was just incredulous. "Am I gonna hafta push you off the roof? Look, this can go one of two ways. You tell me your big secret, or I find it out myself. But whatever you're afraid I'm gonna do if you tell me? I can guarantee it's gonna be worse if I have to play fucking detective." She paused. "And I'll have to talk to Ershey, of course. But if that's the way you want it..." And she started for the stairs.

Risk groaned, running up to Macbeth and immediately grabbing her wrist with a forceful grip. He pulled her back, his hand still on his wrist as the other held her shoulder.
"You wouldn't dare," he growled, his 'Hyde' side coming out. Sure, she could mess with everyone else but not Adrianne. Not his sister.

She actually laughed, in a crazy kind of way, and once again looked him right in the eye. "She's my best friend, and you're...God knows what. Of course I'd dare."

He believed her. He knew that she'd run and tell Ershey whatever news she'd find. But this was something he had to tell her on his own.
"How do I know I can trust you?" he said quietly.

She snorted. "Hard to say when I don't know what the hell you're gonna tell me. But there's no one in this place I give a damn about 'cept Ershey, so who else would I run and tell? Unless you're afraid I'm gonna soak you," she said with heavy sarcasm.
He didn't know she had three switchblades pinned to her petticoats and would damn well kill him in his sleep if she felt the need to.
