Ryan glanced at his watch, desperate to get out of the classroom. The teacher was talking about something he didn't want to hear, so naturally, he tuned her out and started counting down the minutes until school was over.
3... 2... 1... and Ryan grinned. The bell rang and he was free.
"Ryan Lane," shouted the teacher, causing him to stop in his tracks and turn around. "You need tutoring." The teacher handed him his most recent exam. "If you want to graduate, you need to pass. Now, don't worry, I assigned a tutor for you already. Lillian?"

Lillian had been packing away all her books, getting ready to head back to her dorm on the other side of campus, when Mrs. Holmes called out her name.
"Yes, ma'am?" She looked up, her brow furrowed, and saw Ryan Lane standing there looking at her. She immediately blushed and averted his gaze.
"Remember that tutoring I asked you about? Well, here's your pupil," Mrs. Holmes said with a smile. A smile. As if Lillian was supposed to be happy. No, this was terrible. Ryan Lane was the most popular guy in the school. They'd both been going to New Haven Prep for four years. Lillian had harbored a crush on Ryan for four years. And Ryan hadn't even known of Lillian's existence for four years.
All Lillian could reply back with was "...Uh, okay."

Ryan sighed in frustration before finally looking over at Lillian. He had seen her around before. They weren't exactly in the same clique but that didn't mean she wasn't good to look at. He just wondered whether she had the personality to go along with it.
"Good," nodded Mrs. Holmes. "Now, you two figure out when you want to meet every week. And I want to see results." She gave them both a look before heading back towards her desk.
"Ryan," he said, introducing himself as he offered his hand.

Lillian shyly shook his hand, glancing up at him a few times as butterflies inhabited her stomach as she touched him.
"Lillian," she replied as confidently as she could. "Tuesday and Thursday evenings are best for me."

"Let's shoot for Tuesdays," he said thoughtfully. He'd rather get it out of the way during the week as soon as possible. "Is that alright?"

"Yes, that's fine," she nodded before going back to her bookbag and packing everything away. She couldn't stand being so near him anymore.
"Tomorrow at 5 in the library."

"I'll, uh, see you there," said Ryan awkwardly, not sure whether he should give her a hug or wave goodbye. Instead, he smiled at her and nodded before rushing out the door.

Lillian was so confused. She was ecstatic that she would be spending one-on-one time with Ryan Lane, but she was also dreading it. She was smart, yes, but she had never tutored anyone before. What if she lost her patience and he thought she was a complete witch?
Still, she quickly packed up her stuff and rushed to her dorm to tell her best friend and roommate about it.
Before she knew it, it was 4:50pm the next day. She walked into the library, hugging her history book to her chest and finding an empty table near the back.

Ryan looked at the table. He had his books, notebook, pencils and erasers. He was pretty sure he'd brought everything. He glanced around to look for Lillian, waving at her once he saw her enter the room.

Already, Lillian was embarrassed. He was already there and she hadn't seen him. What a blind idiot!
She shook it off and approached the table, a small smile on her lips.
"I saw Mrs. Holmes today. She said she's going to give you a re-take of the last exam, so... I guess that's what I'll go over with you."

"I've got a week," frowned Ryan, already opening his book. "I don't know how much improvement I'll have by then considering we're only meeting once a week."

"Well, we can meet until you feel prepared," she suggested. Her schedule was basically free, but she knew his probably wasn't. Maybe they could exchange numbers and he could text her when he could meet. But, of course, she was too shy to mention this idea.
She sat down beside him and opened her book to the chapter about the French Revolution. She had aced this test; it had seriously been so easy. She wondered what Ryan had gotten on it...

Ryan hated history. He couldn't understand why they had to learn about the past when they were living in the present. It was all so stupid. Then again, he needed to pass. He needed to graduate. "I can sacrifice meeting up everyday this week..."

Oh, how noble of you.
"Okay, well, I guess we should start with the causes of the revolution..." She began to explain about the French government and the taxation and all that jazz, then realized Ryan was looking quite dumbfounded.
"Er, I think maybe it would be easiest to make a map or a timeline."

"I like that idea," nodded Ryan, taking out a sheet of paper and began drawing. With all the scribbling he'd done in class, he knew he could at least make a map.
