Sapphy climbed into her bunk, lethargic as usual. She sold the minimum amount of papers to get her through the day with food and lodging and returned earlier than anyone else so she could sleep.
She laid half-off the bunk to yank out the reasonably-sized trunk that kept her and Copper's meager belongings. She unlocked the trunk with a key from her pocket and rolled onto her back. She pulled out her final newspaper of the day and slowly started to rip out articles. The ones she kept, she dropped over her shoulder into the trunk.
She already had quite the collection in there of murder, mayhem, and government conspiracies.

Goblin knocked on the girls' door and, not hearing any immediate shrieks that would signal nudity, stuck his head in. He was looking for Wraith, as always, because she'd vanished, as always, and was probably in Brooklyn, where he would have to follow her one of these days and meet this girl of hers.
But the only person in the bunkroom was Sapphy, and the sound of ripping paper filled the air. He started to back out, not wanting to disturb her, and then stopped and stared at what she was doing. Obsessively filling a box with papers. Exactly what he'd been doing for months. He flashed back on his giant box of files in the cellar and just couldn't let it go. "Uh...Sapphy? What are you doing?"

Sapphy froze at the sound of Goblin's voice -- how long had be been there.
Nonchalantly, she pushed the trunk's lid with a fingertip and it clasped closed loudly. "Nothing," she said flippantly, casually. Her eyes weren't on Goblin.

"Uh-huh." He took a few steps inside the room and stared at the mutilated newspaper on her bunk. "If the news is so depressing, why would you want to save it all in a box?"

"Don't have a trash can," she answered.

He raised his eyebrows. "Well, I happen to be headed toward one now. I could toss 'em all out for you."

"No thanks." She still wasn't looking at Goblin.

He sighed and took a few more steps forward, resting his hand on her bedpost. "You all right?" He knew she wasn't, but he also knew she didn't appreciate his powers of intuition, so he attempted to make it sound like an actual question.

"Why don't you tell me?" she smiled widely up at him, finally meeting his eyes.

He eyed her warily, not trusting that smile at all. "You're upset about the news, or something in the news, and it's been bothering you for a while--at least since that day we talked in the kitchen. You've got no energy lately, except what you're focusing on those." He motioned at the box. "And...you want me to go away right now. How'd I do?"

"Stellar," she intoned, smile not wavering.

"Great." He eyed the trunk again. "Can I look at 'em?"

Her smile finally faded.
"Why?"

Powers of intuition aside, Goblin didn't know exactly what Sapphy's deal was or why he should tell her anything--except that out of everyone he'd met, she was the only person who seemed like she might actually understand what he was trying to do. "'Cause I've got a collection of my own. I think it's a little more specialized than yours, but there's always a chance you might have something I missed."

Sapphy's eyes narrowed at the word 'specialized.' Was he really comparing what he did as BETTER than hers? Either Goblin wasn't as observant as he liked to think of himself as, or he was fucked up more than her.
She looked back down at the newspaper and loudly ripped it.
