Shaye Nolan worked at her father's auto repair company. It mostly serviced the neighborhood automobiles because it was a single store set-up and family-run. It was small, but it provided for the Nolan's.
Shaye lived in the apartment with her parents and brother above the garage. She was in her senior year of high school and she mostly kept to herself.
Being a psychic made it hard for her to find some real quiet-time.

Tyler McGowan had been working for Mr. Nolan on and off since he was 14. At first he was basically a gopher for the other mechanics, but he had since learned the tools of the trade, and was often personally requested by clients.
He'd known Shaye practically forever, but didn't know her little secret. Not really. Sometimes he got a weird...vibe. But mostly he thought that was just Shaye being Shaye.

Shaye was covered in grease, as per usual, and wearing the company's dark blue suit that protected her clothes underneath. But she never wore anything worth protecting even when she wasn't at work -- just jeans and a tank top, thank you very much.
She liked to pretend she looked like Rosie The Riveter when she was at work.
She was under Mr. Huxley's -- the principal -- car. It was leaking oil. She stopped and listened for a moment, catching a few vague thoughts from -- "Ty? Hey, Ty? Could you kick me over a pan?" Why bother looking for herself when she could see who was around to assist her?

Tyler had just come out from the breakroom, styrofoam cup of coffee in his grubby hand. Instead of kicking the pan over as requested, he brought it to her, crouching beside the pit. "Here ya go. Ain't this the second time this month Huxley's brought that damn car in? When's he just gonna realize he needs a new one?"

"He loves the old -- ugly -- girl," Shaye sighed. She rolled out on the mechanic's creeper and smiled up at him. "T'anks."
Shaye typically had morals when it came to her "gift." Just last year she found a way to control it -- shut the voices out. But sometimes it was hard, particularly in large crowds, so she still had to practice. But when it came to her family and friends and co-workers, she drowned them out. She didn't want to intrude.

Shaye had that look on her face again, the one where her eyes got a little distant, like she was being distracted by something. Tyler was just about to ask her what was up when Maggie walked in from the office.
Maggie Martin worked part time answering phones and keeping the books. She also brought in cookies and such occasionally, which made the mechanics love her enough to work on her car for free when she needed it. She had an ever-present clipboard in her hands. "Guys, we have two eleven o'clocks and one eleven thirty coming in. Shaye, where's that brother of yours? I thought he was scheduled to come in today."

"He's the boss' kid and he's well aware of it?" Shaye offered with an apologetic smile. "Sorry Mags, you know how Kevin is on Saturdays -- recovering from Fridays."
Kevin was the laziest mechanic in the shop. He certainly didn't care for the work like Shaye -- he just knew his way around a car with the help of having a greaser for a father.

((Night!! ) Maggie rolled her eyes, illiciting a snort from Tyler. "You've gotta be kidding me. You three are the only one's on staff today." She all but stomped over to the intercom on the wall, glad that Mr. Nolan had the foresight to connect it to the apartment, one in each room, in case of emergency. She pushed the button for Kevin's room, making sure her voice was loud and clear. "Kevin Nolan, get your lazy ass down here this instant! Don't make me call your father and ruin your parents' vacation!" At this point, Tyler was practically rolling with laughter. He shot a grin at Shaye. "She's got 'Catholic School Girl' written all over 'er. Good thing Kevin knows she feeds him, otherwise, he'd kill 'er." He put an amiable arm around Shaye's shoulders, always having a soft spot for her.

Shaye put her hands on her hips and smirked at Tyler.
"You two don't have to go home with him at the end of the day."
Kevin, who wasn't in his room, kicked open the main entrance door to the garage. He had on a hoodie and thick sunglasses. He was smiling, still a little drunk from last night.
"Fantastic!" Shaye smiled at his presence.
Kevin lowered his sunglasses, winked at his sister and gave her the point-and-shoot with his hand.

Tyler smirked, moving over to the tool table looking for a wrench. He whistled the Funeral March under his breath, shooting a wink at Shaye.
Maggie glared at Kevin, hands on her hips. "Seriously?! Kevin, you were supposed to be here a half an hour ago!"

"Good to know. I'm here now. Can't change the past, Mags," he said, voice sounding far away as he sauntered around the garage.
Sapphy rolled her eyes and returned under Mr. Huxley's car. Out of curiosity, she peeked into Kevin's brain.
"Ewww! You were with Jenna Downey?!" Shaye convulsed. "WHY?"
Kevin spun and glared at Shaye's feet sticking out from underneath the car. He was the only one who knew about her ability.
"What have I told you about doin' that?" he demanded, voice dangerously soft.

Tyler and Maggie exchanged looks, Tyler giving a shrug before saying. "That's a pretty good guess, Sugar. Guessin' the girl just by the dopey look on his face." He shot Kevin an amused smirk, but his thoughts were on Shaye.
Maggie on the other hand looked annoyed, and perhaps even a little upset. "Yeah, well Jenna Downey puts that look on a lot of guys' faces." She looked pointedly at Kevin. "A lot."

"I know, that's why I wrapped it," Kevin groaned, resting his head on Huxley's hood. He was starting to come back down and sober up.

Tyler snorted, watching for Maggie's reaction to that lovely little tidbit.
Maggie, pursed her lips, her cheeks pinkening just a little. "Charming. You're a total idiot." And I'm an idiot for caring so damn much. A car pulled up just then, and Maggie walked over to the driver's side, all smiles, proud of herself for refraining from storming out.
Tyler looked at Kevin sidelong, smirking. "You, uh, wanna take this one, or...?"

"Oh no, man! It's all you!" Kevin didn't even raise his head from the hood of the car.
Shaye made a tsk sound underneath the car.
