Tag was lurking somewhat creepily in the fiction section of the New York Public Library. She was pretending to peruse the shelves for a book, but what she was really doing was keeping a lookout. She'd met other newsies in the library before, so she knew she wasn't safe at all times.
When she convinced herself the coast was clear, she bent down to a low shelf and pulled out The Lord of Scoundrels, a romantic novel she'd had her eye on for weeks now. But now that her reputation around the house had become one filled with shocking, erotic novels, she did her best to stay away. The lure of the novel, however, was too strong, and Tag found she couldn't resist any longer. Still, she did all she could not to be seen by anyone she knew or that knew her.

Macbeth was treating herself. Decadently. She was sprawled on the floor of the library, taking up half an aisle, with books open all around her, reading passages from one dusty British novel after another as she tried to make her selection. She was so engrossed, in fact, that she had completely forgotten about the toddler she was supposed to be supervising.
Jo toddled around the corner of the bookcase into the next aisle, found a strange girl there, beamed, and shouted, "HI!"

Tag was so startled, she dropped the book. When she stood up she knocked into the shelf, causing more books to fall. She scrambled to pick them all up, but she was in such a tizzy she could barely hold onto more than one at a time.
"Uhm, hello..." Tag replied, searching through the fallen books to find The Lord of Scoundrels and quickly stuff it under her shirt. Normally, Tag would be delighted to see a small child, but right now she didn't want to see anyone.

Macbeth, meanwhile, had been startled out of her reverie by the loud cry and the falling books. Scowling, she marched into the next aisle. "Jo, what the hell are you--" She froze when she saw a rather familiar girl scrambling among the books. And she'd so hoped for some peace and quiet away from the other newsies. And this one had the oddest bulge in her shirt. "Expecting a baby?" Beth asked sarcastically, pinning Jo to her side with one arm. "They're more trouble'n they're worth."

A bright pink blush overtook Tag's face as she awkwardly put the books back on their shelves while trying to keep her book tucked away. "Er, no..." she replied quietly, not even looking at the girl. Though she knew the girl was a newsie, she could not think of her name.

Macbeth raised an eyebrow. Normally, she would've grabbed Jo and cleared out before she got herself into trouble like she always did, but something about this girl gave Beth an irresistible urge to mess with her. "Maybe you're overdoing the brownies a little, then? Looks like you're getting a bit'a paunch there."
"BOOKS!" announced Jo, whose vocabulary was growing by the day. She pulled away from her aunt and grabbed the nearest book by one edge, holding it up so it hung open in front of her, and stared at the letters on the pages as if she could somehow make sense of them.

Tag cleared her throat, putting the last fallen book on the shelf extra slowly.
"Er...it's a book...I'm not trying to steal it though!" Tag's voice became quite panicked as she said the last part, her eyes wide as she looked at the girl.

Macbeth actually started and stared at the girl, forgetting all about the book under her shirt. That accent made her feel like she'd gone back in time. "There's a bloody Brit in our lodging house and I didn't even know it?" she demanded, the barest hint of Cockney creeping into her voice for the first time in months. "You must never open your mouth!"

Tag stared back at the girl, though she was a bit more frightened than the girl seemed to be. Actually, she didn't seem frightened at all. She seemed...annoyed. And scary.
"I...guess not? I mostly just keep to myself and...my boyfriend."

Macbeth just snorted at that. Every girl had a bloody boyfriend. "Well, I don't blame you for leaving the old country, London's a worse hellhole than New York," she said scathingly, then noticed what Jo was doing and rolled her eyes. "Gimme that, jan, you'll break the spine," she said, taking the book from her and examining the cover. Sophronia's Secrets. Huh.

Tag cleared her throat nervously, finally standing up straight and facing the girl head on. "It...it wasn't my choice to leave. I loved London."

Flipping through the book, Beth looked up long enough to smirk at her. "Judging by the classy accent, I'm sure you saw a different side of it."
Jo toddled over to Tag and looked up at her curiously.

"My parents were...of a certain status, if that's what you mean," Tag replied quietly, ignoring the small flutter of bitterness she felt at the girl's tone.
When the child stepped up to her, looking up at her with those large eyes, Tag couldn't help but smile. "Hello," she said, her tone friendly and welcoming.

"Namathtey!" Jo said happily, lisping the way she always did when she attempted the Hindi greeting. She reached up to try and grab Tag's nose, but it was much too high. That made her lip quiver.
"Oh, yeah?" Macbeth said, almost growling. "Well, my dad was 'of a certain status' too, till he went and married a savage heathen. Funny how they'll yank your status for things like that." Her eyebrow rose steadily higher as she skimmed the pages of the book and finally looked up at Tag again. "What the hell kinda aisle is this, anyway?"

Tag looked up from the curious little girl, but only to blush when she met the other girls' eyes. "It's for books of a certain...romantic nature," she squeaked, shuffling her feet nervously on the carpet.
