"Yes, really..." Tag mumbled, following Macbeth to the check out counter. She smiled at the librarian, though she blushed a bit when she remembered what exactly she was checking out.
((I'm heading to the grocery store! Be back soon!))

Macbeth was surprised that Tag had come after her and answered her question--she could've just hidden in the stacks and waited for Beth to leave. Maybe she wasn't quite as pathetically shy as she seemed.
She checked out her book and stepped aside, lingering, despite Jo's hungry whimpers, to watch in amusement as Tag was forced put her scandalous novel on display.
((See ya soon! <3))

Tag set her book on the counter slowly; she wasn't sure why she was this embarrassed. The librarian had checked out handfuls of romantic novels for Tag in the past year and a half. She had never judged her before, so why should she start now? But none of that mattered. She still blushed. And she was relieved when the librarian handed the book back to her.

"Damn," Beth said when they were both headed for the door, "it's just a book. I'll bet Shakespeare's got dirtier language than that thing." She'd never seen anyone blush so much in her life, especially not a newsie.

"I just don't want anyone to get the wrong idea of me," Tag explained, her voice still hushed even though they were now outside of the library. "I like to read these books because they don't require thinking. I can read them for escape. Not for...tips or anything."

"What do you care what people think?" she demanded, genuinely baffled, as they walked down the street. "Half the girls 'round here are sleeping with their boyfriends, or with anyone they want to. Even if you was picking up tips from those ridiculous books, so what?"

Tag hugged her book to her chest, deftly avoiding people on the sidewalk.
"I'm not that kind of girl. Some might call me a 'prude,' and so be it."

Macbeth chuckled darkly and shifted Jo to her other shoulder. "Don't worry. They call me worse."

Tag desperately wanted to know, but she didn't feel comfortable enough to ask. "So, how long have you lived on Duane Street?" she asked instead, narrowly avoiding a collision with a crazed looking wartime soldier.

"Couple months. Coming right off a year in dear old London. And yourself?" She didn't really care, but she might as well pass the time somehow while she looked for a cheap place to get Jo something to eat.

"About a year and a half now," Tag informed her, nodding to herself. She couldn't believe it'd been that long. It seemed like she wandered into the Lodging House just last weekend.

"So what landed you here? What happened to England and the respectable fam'ly?" She and Tag seemed to be headed in the same direction, but maybe Tag would choose a new one if she asked enough nosy questions.
Jo, meanwhile, sucked on a strand of her aunt's hair. Beth let her. She'd been meaning to cut it short again anyway.

"My, er, dad's job. He found one here, so we moved. But there was a fire," she replied, clearly uncomfortable. Her voice was quiet and it trailed away at the end of her sentence.

Macbeth glanced at her. "My sister died having Jo, and my dad killed himself when I told him," she said matter-of-factly. "Kinda sad, the things we bond over 'round here, huh?"

"Yes...i-it is. It's terrible." Tag's voice was still uncomfortably quiet, but she was also pleased that Macbeth hadn't snapped at her or said something sarcastic. Maybe she was warming up to her a bit?
