"Columbus and 96th," answered Risk. "It's near Central Park... maybe a ten minute walk away? Rent's about $5 a month. We can split it."

((The thought of $5 rent is making my toes curl.))
"I'd pay it," she said quickly. "I mean, I'd be the one using the place. And I've got two jobs now, so..." She thought about it. If Ershey, Risk, even Racetrack made a habit of selling in the park now and then, it wouldn't be hard to leave Jo with one of them while she worked at Tibby's. The lodging house would be within regular visiting distance, too. There would be no more complaints about Jo keeping lodgers up at night, no more worries that Kloppman would catch on and throw her out. "But, I mean...can you live here and be a cop? Are you just gonna commute to the station or something?" She couldn't help but be amused at the thought.

"I'll, uh... manage," he muttered, only realizing now what he'd just proposed.
Ershey grinned. "Why don't the two of you just live together? It'd be cheaper!"

Macbeth scowled at her. "Very funny." She was assuming this was a one-bedroom place.

"What? Why not?" smiled Ershey, glancing at the both of them. "Just give Macbeth your bed... and you can sleep on the couch! C'mon, Beth, you said you didn't like living by yourself."
"Adri, I don't think that's a good idea..."

Macbeth paled, unable to believe that this scenario was actually being discussed in a serious context. "We'd kill each other within a week," she said through gritted teeth.

"It was just a suggestion," said Ershey, shrugging as she focused on eating her cookie.
Risk, however, was freaking out. "A week? Really? We wouldn't last a day."

"An hour, tops, and that's just how long it'd take us to get Jo outta the way." She set Jo on the table and got up abruptly, stalking over to the icebox under the pretense of looking for milk. "You should just move out, go back to your life. Thanks for the offer, though," she said stiffly.
((YOU'RE OBSESSED! OMG! I'm so excited for you!! ;D))

"No, really, Beth, I'm serious," said Ershey, her tone becoming more serious. Sure, she said it as a joke, but it seemed as if it made sense. At least to her, it did. "You'd walk all the way over here for someone to watch over Jo? Do you realize how much easier it'd be if Alec were there? And you two would split the rent, so Beth, you may not even have to sell papes if you really don't want to.."
"Adri, she said no... we can just switch and everything'll be fine," muttered Risk, shooting his sister a look.
"And what? You'll live in the lodging house as a cop? That doesn't make sense. You might as well tell everybody while you're at it."

Macbeth looked up in alarm at that. She pulled out a pitcher of milk and headed back to the table, pouring Jo a glass. "You can't live here and be a cop," she told Risk bluntly. "You wanna get yourself killed?"

"What, now you agree with her?" said Risk in awe. ((Aaaand this is how their awesome undefined relationship starts ))

((LOVE IT. SO MUCH. And oh, the ideas I have for future threads. ;D))
"No!" She glared and sat down, handing Jo the glass. "It's the worst bloody idea I've ever heard. But you can't stay here, and me and Jo can't really stay here, so what the hell else are we gonna do, huh?"

"What if... I got a bigger place? Two bedrooms?" mumbled Risk, actually considering Ershey's idea.
"...Do you have the money for that?" asked Ershey in surprise.
"If we split it, it'd work." He glanced at Macbeth hopefully then back at Jo.

She eyed him thoughtfully for a good long time. "Honestly...I think you know enough not to bother me. Ever. And if you're gonna help with Jo and we split the rent..."
She paused suddenly to really consider this. She was getting a proper home for herself and her niece and a free baby-sitter. Risk, who could doubtless swing the rent himself on a cop's salary, was getting nothing at all. "Why the hell are you doing this?" she demanded.

"'Cause..." started Risk hesitantly. Why is he helping her so much? "'Cause you're Ershey's best friend... a-and you helped me find her, so I owe you."
Ershey gaped. Really? He was pulling this? She looked over at Macbeth, waiting for her response.
