"Even meaner, prob'ly," she muttered as she blew on her tea, and finally opened her eyes and took a sip. Her expression was rapturous. Almost awkwardly so. Like maybe she and the tea needed some alone time.

Risk watched Macbeth in awe, surprised at how peaceful she looked once she finally had tea. She actually looked... okay. He stared at her for a couple minutes before realizing what he was doing.
"Uh, your turn."

"Hmm?" She swallowed the delicious herbal brew and looked over at Risk. "Oh. Hmm. What's the weirdest case you ever worked on?" She'd never actually heard any cop stories. They had to be more exciting than newsie stories.

"I was always given the messy ones when I started... y'know, the ones no one wanted to take? I had to bear and grin it for a couple years," he said, cringing inwardly. "I had to go after a husband who supposedly had five affairs in different cities... he was, uh, greedy. But he pulled it off for two years until the ladies started barging into the office to have someone find him."

Macbeth snickered and looked at him mock-solemnly. "I'm sure the whole city slept better at night with a dangerous cad like that behind bars." She took another gulp of tea and made her happy face again as it warmed her from the inside out, then waited for him to ask his next question.
Jo had met a beetle. They were becoming fast friends. It had made its way up to her elbow.

"It just reminded me that it's always better to stick with one," chuckled Risk, taking a sip of his tea.

"Zero's always worked out pretty good for me," Beth said, cradling the teacup against her cheek. She was never more English than whan she was drinking tea. Even her accent was drifting a bit.

Risk frowned. "...Not even just one?"

She rolled her eyes. "Be honest. Can you imagine me in a romantic relationship? With anyone? Ever?" Sure, she'd briefly thought that Risk might have some mad delusional crush on her, but she'd dismissed that thought when he suggested the apartment and scoffed at the idea that anything would happen between them. It was absurd that she'd ever entertained the notion in the first place.

"Uh, not anyone at the top of my head," he muttered shyly. He wanted to ask how about me? but refused to sound too cheesy. The last thing he wanted was to make things awkward now that they were living together. "Have you ever went out with anyone?"

"Nope," she said nonchalantly, taking tiny sips of her tea to draw out the last couple mouthfuls as long as she could. "That your question?"
Jo crawled out from under the table, got up, and toddled across the room. She put the beetle on the windowsill. He flew outside. She watched enviously.

"Why not?" he shot back as he patiently watched Jo. He had to remind himself to baby proof the place. Then again, he was sure that Jo was a capable kid.

She gave him an incredulous look, starting to get annoyed, and ticked the reasons off her fingers. "First of all, who the hell'd be psychotic enough to wanna be with me in the first place? Second of all, I'd drive 'em crazy. Third, they'd drive me crazy. It'd all end in a big bloody tragedy, unless I just made a total fool of myself. Also..." She was on a roll up until this point, but then she stopped abruptly and glared at him. "Well, I'd say that's enough bloody reasons."

"...Also, what?" asked Risk, hanging on every word.

Her glare turned into a death glare, which she fixed on him for a few moments before turning toward the wall, gazing very intently at it, and crossing her arms over her chest. The silence went on forever. You could've heard a pin drop. Even Jo had settled down under the window to sulk about her lost friend.
"...I'm holding out for someone who's completely in love with me."
