"What's the best Christmas you ever had?" he asked, resting his ankle on the knee of his other leg and stretching his arm across the back of the bench.

She shifted to snuggle up against him, head resting in the crook of his shoulder. "There was one year, when I was probably 8 or 9, Mama and me made enough cookies to last a lifetime. We decorated all of them and everything. I kept making Daddy try them, and he ate them 'cause he didn't want to disappoint me." She laughed, remembering. "I think he had a stomach ache for days. He turned grey every time he even saw a cookie until after New Year's."
