Zippy nodded, immediately understanding. If Jack didn't talk to her, she wouldn't be around much either. "I had this other job for awhile, but it didn't work out. So now I'm back."

He nodded at her, raising his glass in a mock-toast before taking a drink. "Well, welcome back." He paused a minute so the waiter could put their food in front of them. "So where were you working before?"

Zippy opened her mouth, about to lie. There was no reason she should tell him the truth and she wasn't too proud of the truth either. But...David seemed like a reasonable enough guy, and she did kind of want to talk about it to someone. She felt awful about it.
"At a Jewish synagogue on the Upper East Side. I baby-sat for the young children while their parents and siblings prayed."

"Synagogue? That's like a church, right? That seems like a nice gig, why'd ya leave to come back to this?" He gestured at the papers. Why would anyone want to do this if they had other options.

"Because I broke off my engagement to the Rabbi's son," Zippy replied nonchalantly, sipping on her soup and dipping a piece of bread into it.

He stopped to blink at her, sandwich halfway to his mouth. "You were engaged??" He was always so surprised when people his age were engaged her married. He still kind of felt like a kid.

Zippy nodded, sighing from the thought. "Yes. Its kind of a long story, and its really weird to be over here again eating at Tibby's and begging businessmen to buy my papers."

He let out a low whistle, setting his sandwich down. "I bet. Can't be easy, comin' back to all this." He watched her a minute, considering whether it was really any of his business, but he was curious. "So, uh...why'd ya break it off..?"

"I was pressured into it. You know how Jewish mothers are." Zippy explained, swirling her spoon around in her bowl and frowning. "It was a hard decision to leave. His family loved me, he could have given me the family I'd always wanted. Now I'm all alone again."
She glanced up at him, and forced a smile. "I'm sorry, I tend to say too much. It's a problem."

David gave her a sympathetic look and reached for her hand without thinking. "Hey, it's okay. If ya need to talk about it...I'm an okay listener." He gave a sheepish shrug. She looked so sad. Pretty girls should never be sad, but they always seemed to be the saddest out of anybody.

"I'm not sad," Zippy responded, awkwardly pulling her hand away, blushing. A man hadn't touched her that tenderly since...
well, ever.
"So, David. What's your story? Lightening the mood would be much appreciated." She joked.

His ears were pink with embarrassment, and he grabbed a napkin, tearing at it to keep his hands busy, officially done with his sandwich. "Well...I punched Jack once. 'S why we don't talk anymore."

Zippy chuckled. "Not that part. Other parts of your life. You don't live in the lodging house, do ya live with your family?"

He nodded. "Yeah. It's kinda crowded, but it's okay. I used to spend nights at the lodging house. Kinda miss hanging out with everybody." Well, hanging out with everybody until they all broke off into pairs. And then he had to sit around kind of awkwardly or just go to bed.

((aww Zippy and Davey are kinda perfect for each other, very lonely. I'm Britt, by the way, I think I took my hiatus with the LH around the time you started getting into it))
Zippy looked at Davey, suddenly feeling kinda sorry for him, which was a nice break from feeling sorry for herself. "What do you like to do for fun?" She asked, smiling at him. Maybe they could do something fun.
