It was snowing.
Eli had been no good at selling papers, and he'd finally gotten a job at a construction company, painting and building things, and therefore had been able to pay Zippy back. Zippy celebrated by buying a fresh pair of gloves, a new hat and a scarf, all bright blue, clean, and soft. It was right in time for the first snow, and it was also her day off. She was in a great mood and all she wanted to do was see David.
While waiting for Dave to get home, she sat on the steps of his apartment building, watching the snowflakes fall.

"Les, slow down! If you hurt yourself, Mom's gonna blame me!" David huffed, trying to keep up with his brother, who was too busy running and sliding over patches of ice.
"Aw, don't be lame, Davey! Hey! It's Zippy!" Les ran ahead, almost barreling right into her.

"Heya Les!" Zippy greeted, patting him on the hat before jumping into David's arms. "I missed you."

David laughed, catching her. He gave her a slow kiss, even as Les made disgusted faces beside them. "Hi, sweetie. Missed you, too."

"I'm with you, kid," Eli joked, coming out from the outhouse and heading towards them. "Davey J!" He greeted, smiling and patting David on the shoulder. "How was school, did ya learn why leaves are green and the sky is blue?"
Zippy laughed, untangling herself from David's grasp. "Eli is treating us all to dinner."

David frowned, eyeing Eli warily. "'Scuse me?"
Les hopped up and down. "Aw, me too? Me too?"

Eli looked down at Les, laughing. "Of COURSE, little man! I'm Eli. I heard from Zippy you are the best newsie in all of New York City." He shook Les's hand. "I'm honored to meet you."
Zippy beamed at Eli, laughing.

Les grinned up at Eli, deciding he was his new favorite. "I am! I sell more than Davey sometimes!"
David grumbled something under his breath, taking a hold of Zippy's hand.

"I can believe that!" Eli responded, chuckling and kneeling down to Les's level. "I'm no good at selling, I had to find a real job." He sighed loudly, with a shrug. "Maybe you can take me sometime, Les."
Zippy looked over at David, squeezing his hand. "Eli got a job with a construction company, isn't that great?"

David pursed his lips as they all began to walk down the street. "Peachy."
Les laughed. "You bet!" Then he took off running, sliding on another patch of ice.

"Whoa there, Little J," Eli exclaimed, laughing and then following his lead, sliding on a patch of ice. "You're a genius, anyone ever tell you that?"
Zippy linked her arm through David's. "How was your day? We got a new shipment of art books in and I've been sorting them all day. It was great!"

Les laughed, glad he had someone to goof around with, since David never would.
David kept his eyes trained on Les and Eli, the corner of his mouth turned down. "See anything you'd want?"

Zippy shrugged. "Naw, but it was great that I got paid to flip through them." She nuzzled her face in his shoulder, and looked up at him. "I can't believe this is happening. See, I told you Eli was a good guy."
Eli took a running start before sliding on a patch of ice, falling flat on his face. "That'll hurt in the mornin'," he groaned, standing back up.

David snorted as he watched Eli hit the pavement. That made him feel substantially better about things.
Les rushed to Eli's side, trying very hard to look concerned and not laugh. "You okay?"

Zippy shook her head chuckling as Eli, laughing, immediately grabbed Les and slid down a long patch of ice.
"Dave. Eli paid me back, you didn't even say anything about my new hat!" Zippy put both her hands on her hat, grinning.
