Trixie loved some good gossip, so she nodded, chewing her lip. "I used to dance over at MayBelle's, by the river. A lot a' the girls -- me included -- we...well, we sometimes let the guys...we all lived there, in rooms on the second floor, and we..." She couldn't quite seem to get it out.

Zippy looked at her, and decided to assume what she was about to say. This was sort of good, actually, because she had been meaning to ask... "You girls. Did any of them...do stuff to protect themselves? So they wouldn't get pregnant?"
((you should consider reading "Sex Wars" by Marge Piercy. I really enjoyed it, its takes place in NYC during 19th century. about the feminist sex wars. The main character makes condoms in her apartment and sells them to brothels and pharmacies.))

The door opened again, and Eli and Luke came inside, laughing and followed by two girls. "Trixie!" he exclaimed, going over to her and kissing her. He had alcohol on his breath.

"out with a few of the guys. I didn't know you were stopping by, Sweets, otherwise I woulda came straight home." Eli managed to sit on the ledge of her chair, although he was a bit wobbly.
At this point, zippy was furious with him. "Eli. Who are they?" she pointed rudely at the two girls.
"Luke's friends," Eli replied smoothly, but he was fighting a laugh.
