Rose's mom slapped his hand. "Don't even think about it. Rosie, get him out of here before he has a chance to be helpful."
Rose grabbed Tyler's arm and led him into the living room, starting the tour. It ended with his bedroom upstairs.

Once they were in his room, he turned to her, suddenly feeling a little awkward and nervous. "You, uh...your parents are great. I like 'em a whole lot."

She smiled, opening her mouth to reply. But she was interrupted by the ring of her cell phone. She fished it out of her pocket and checked the caller ID. "It's Michael. I'll see you tomorrow good night!" she said quickly to Tyler before answering, heading to her own room.

As soon as she was gone, he let out a growing, falling back onto the bed and muttering, "Goddammit, McGowan. Yer outcher' damn mind."

Rose awoke early the next morning, making herself some toast for breakfast before heading out to the stables. Her mom began to make a good, Southern breakfast with biscuits and eggs and bacon and sausage and her famous blueberry pancakes.

Tyler came down to the smell of bacon, wearing jeans and a flannel. "Mm, Mama, yer spoilin' me." He came up to Mrs. Howard giving her a loud, wet kiss on her cheek.

"Well, unlike someone I could speak of, I actually want to..." Now that Rose wasn't in earshot and she had Tyler alone, she was going in for the kill.
"Have you met him yet? Mike?" she asked, trying hard to hide her distaste.

He nodded, perhaps a little gravely. "Just that once, at the market." He licked his lips before saying. "I don't like 'im, Mama. He ain't good enough for her."

"I've tried to tell her that. Oh, believe me, I've tried. But she won't listen. Not to me, anyway..." she glanced at him from her place at the stove, as if hoping he would get what she was trying to say.

He sighed, raking a hand through his hair. "Now, Mama, it ain't really non a' my business. It's been ten years, I can't just waltz in and start tellin' her how to live her life. We hardly know each other now, really."

"So get to know her again," she countered, flipping a pancake. "Make sure she knows you care about her, that she can trust you. It may take some time, but believe you me, they won't be getting married anytime soon. Engaged for six months now, haven even talked about a date." She shook her head, muttering a bit to herself.

He sighed. "I missed her, Mama. I think I've always loved her a little bit. As much as any twelve year old can love a person, anyway." He looked at her. "I don't feel right movin' in on an other man's fiance, no matter how much I don't like him."

"Then just be her friend," she told him, her voice soft but firm. "And have a little faith. Now. You sit down and eat a good breakfast. Rosie wants to get you out riding as soon as you're done."

He sighed, nodding and sitting down to eat. He wasn't sure that friendship was really what he wanted from Rose Howard.
When he'd finished, he kissed her mother again, and headed outside towards the stables, stretching his arms up over his head.

Rose rode up on her black Arabian, her cheeks flushed already from riding. She dismounted easily, sending him a smile. "Bet mama fed you well," she inferred, leading him over to a brown and white Pinto, a bit bigger and sturdier than her own. He was already saddled, ready for Tyler.
