"That's why it's called pretending," muttered Hammer, shrugging. He never really liked hanging around those types of places. It seemed as if everyone had their masks on. Even though Brooklyn was rugged around the edges, at least the people were real.

She managed a smile and closed her eyes, "Yeah.. i'd hate having to pretend all the time, would get exhausting."

Hammer nodded, knowing full well what she was talking about. "What else do you do around here for fun? Drink? Gamble?"

"Mmm mostly, the boys go to the pub a lot. Lot of cards, if you want to know about the gambling best ask Cor-- he's got his hand in everything around here and knows all about that stuff. I tend too... well eat."

"Cor?" he repeated, quite curious to know more about the other people that lived in the lodging house.

"Corsair-- he's a Scot.. good friends with my brother... he's a bookie most of the time."

"You've got a brother?" he said, not sure if he should be scared. He was pretty sure society was still more or less the same -- siblings looking after one another. Then again, he knew so much about betrayal that he doubted it all. "Why isn't he the one taking care of ya?"

"He doesn't know," she raised a finger and gave him a serious look. "And don't you even think about telling him either. He doesn't need to add one more thing.." She believed that, Buccaneer blamed himself for enough and he didn't need to go doing this too. "He drinks too much as it is.."

Hammer raised an eyebrow at her. "He doesn't hit you, does he?"

She laughed and shook her head, a sad smile on her face, "Marcus wouldn't ever hit me... even if I beat him up. He.." she looked out into the street and sighed. "He blames himself for me bein' mixed up with the blokes I was... blames himself for not bein' around. He's a good brother-- an' a good person he just drinks like a sod. An' hes not even violent when he does, it just makes him stupid.."

Hammer chuckled softly, shaking his head. "Better that he's a stupid drunk than a violent drunk. Then who knows what'd happen."

"He'd be dead by now I'd wager," she shrugged her shoulders. "I don't want him to worry so I don't tell him. Because he worries himself to the bottle.."

"That just means he cares. That's what matters," he replied, shrugging. He didn't have any siblings (or knew of any), so the idea of that sort of companionship was rare yet something he was incredibly jealous of.

She watched his profile for a moment before she tilted her head, "So do I get to ask any questions and get real answers or-- am I just going to keep telling you things?" It wasn't accusing, she was being honest.

"You can ask," he replied, glancing over at her. He was content not talking about himself but he might just be willing to share. "I might answer."
