"Mysterious bugger," she muttered looking over at the street again. "Why did you come to New York?"

"I didn't like Jersey," he answered plainly. "I wanted a change of scenery, so I'm here."

"That's not the whole story," she replied as she looked up to him. "You're story-- bet it's a sad one to put that look in your eyes.." Hell they all had sad stories, but they were all stubborn and rather arrogant. She was brave, but she'd had to learn how to be. "Ain't no body to hear you if you want to talk about it.." Hell, she was kind of fond of the stranger, it was strange to her but-- she couldnt' help it.

"Sorry," chuckled Hammer, shaking his head at her. "Ain't gonna share right now. You can ask me something else though."
It's not that he was trying to be mysterious -- he was still testing his boundaries. Trusting people is hard after spending time in jail and hearing what people are possibly capable of.

That made her smile, oddly enough-- she closed her eyes and took a few slow breaths. The air was nice on her skin, it made her feel a bit better even though she was stiffening up. "Alright... you came here because you wanted? What do you intend to do?"

"Find a job," he answered honestly. "Being a newsie might help me start out... I don't have a lot. Probably try to do something with carpenting or fixing things. I'm sure people who do that get paid, right?" He looked at her hopefully as if she had all the answers in the world.

It was kind of interesting, this conversation. She'd figure at some point that she'd fallen asleep as she was having a normal conversation that wasn't about yelling or her telling someone she was fine. "Mmm trades work is big here-- there are some wood workers around who might need some help. Can't make a living really selling papers but it'll get a roof over your head."

"It's better than nothing," said Hammer, shrugging. "I'd rather do something I was good at and make money off of that... you know any wood workers around here, maybe?"

"I might be able to get you in touch with a couple," she coughed and then wrapped her arm around her middle as she closed her eyes for a long moment. "There are enough tradesman if you know it, they might take you on to apprentice or help out with extra work."

"Thanks," he said sincerely, amazed at his luck. Who knew he was going to find work this fast? "No rush though... maybe when you're feeling a bit better. Y'know, when you can walk without hurting. I can live off of papers."

"No problem, we do what we can.." Funny, sure the Brooks kids had their own thing but most of them too care of each other in their own ways. She could introduce him to someone that used to work with her Dad, it wasn't a big deal. "Hah hah... I dunno when that's gonna be, Johnny boy."

"I told ya," he smirked at her, growing quite fond of this new friendship. "No rush. We don't want you breaking all over again, right? Plus, I'm sure your brother will kill me if he found out you got hurt again 'cause of me..."

She laughed, "If you catch him sober he's more reasonable.... and he knows I hate being mollycoddled." She kind of wished she wasn't so mangled up, she'd show him around the neighborhood. But as it was this was as much as she could do, she wasn't too foolish to know better. She grinned, "It took four guys with clubs to do this to me, I don't think just walkin' around would break me any.."

"Good. It's good that you can take care of yourself. Most people can't," he said, people watching as he looked out on the street.

Finally! Someone realized she could take care of herself! Isa actually smiled and settled down a bit, "I can take care of myself, I don't need someone to do it for me..."
((lol the story of my life XD)
