She shrugged, smiling. "I don't mind it, but sometimes it's nice to have some space to breathe." She glanced over at him with an impish look. "And some of the girls snore."

"The boarding house I lived at before, everyone there worked during the nights, so I had the bunk room to myself most times. I suppose it spoiled me," she said with a smile.

"Our teachers at school always told us that early risers are more successful," Birdie said with a smile. She reached for one of the extra blankets and spread one side out over her knees, offering Jack the other half.

"She wasn't a horrible one, at least," Birdie said, grinning. "Though my friends and I used to sneak out of the dormitory and go buy papers with our pocket money. We were quite scandalous."

"You're very smart, Jack," she argued, wrapping her arms around her knees. "You knew what to do when I got away from Priest's boys, and you sell more papers than anyone else in the house."

"I'm smart for a newsies," he nudged her shoulder with his own. "So you went to a fancy school huh?" Jack had always been interested in school, he'd never had a chance to finish. He had to get out on his own and support his family.
