She nodded. "It was useless, though. I learned how to crochet and to dance the waltz, but not how to cook anything or to earn money."

"Now don't say that. You could crochet scarves and sweaters couldn't ya? Half these kids are freezing all winter long." Jack shrugged, "and...I could always waltz with ya."

"Do you know how to waltz?" she asked, smiling up at him. "I love to dance."

Birdie giggled, then tilted her head to look up at him. "I'm not sure Irving Hall has waltzes on the program, but I can pull some strings and arrange a lesson for you." She grinned happily.

At that, she blushed, smiling up at him so happily that she thought she might burst with it. She pulled the blanket up to her chin. Really, she shouldn't have let him stay up here with her for so long -- he had papers to sell in the morning, and it really was rather late.

"You tired? I could go..." Jack said, but he didn't really sound like he wanted to go. He would stay there all night if she wanted him too.

Birdie shook her head, then lay back onto the pillow, smiling. "Just a little longer," she said, though she was starting to feel a bit sleepy. Jack made her feel safe and warm, she didn't want him to go.

Jack smiled and then laid down beside her, he didn't have to leave and he certainly didn't want to.

Birdie settled on her side so she could face him, holding the blanket up under her chin. "Jack," she began, her voice growing a bit drowsy, "why do the other newsies call you Cowboy?"

"Yeah. They call me Cowboy, Spot calls me Jacky-boy," He said, turning over to face her as well, he pulled the blanket up around him and yawned.

"Jacky-boy," she repeated with a sleepy laugh, then closed her eyes and snuggled against the pillow.

Jack yawned, "Yeah...wish I could call him Spottykins," Jack grinned at the tought and then yawned again. He curled up on his side too, closing his eyes.

"I won't tell," Birdie promised, then promptly fell asleep, her head falling forward onto his shoulder.
