Birdie slept there on the floor of the attic until morning, when the sunlight fell in through the window and directly into her eyes. Half-awake, she put a hand up to block the light, listening to the sound of Kloppman waking up the newsies downstairs.

Jack audibly groaned, turning over onto his side. No, he was not getting up.

At the sound, Birdie furrowed her brow and looked over at Jack, then did a double-take. Why was he here? And why were they on the floor? Together? It took a moment for her to recall, then she put her hand on her mouth, giggling.
"Jack," she said quietly, touching him on the shoulder. "Jack, it's morning."

Birdie lifted her eyebrows -- there was no telling what that was supposed to mean -- and sat up, kneeling on the blanket and leaning over his shoulder. "Jack," she tried again, laughing. "Aren't you getting up?"

"Huh?" Jack grumbled and then flopped over onto his back, rubbing his eyes. "I dun wanna," he said with a sigh and then smiled at her. "Hi."

Birdie broke into a broad smile, scrunching her nose as she looked down at him. "Hi. I fell asleep. I suppose you did, too."

Once he was up he leaned over and kissed her cheek. "Always," He said smiling.

She blushed happily as his lips touched her cheek. "I like you very much, Jack," she said quietly, smiling. "I'm very glad you kissed me back last night."

Birdie flushed darker, giving him a smile that was more than a little starry-eyed. That settled it, she was smitten. "You do?" she asked as she bit her lip.
