David sniffed the punch as he accepted his own glass. "Uh, this has been pretty heavily spiked..."

Zippy snickered. "Jack, did you do this?"

"Well whatever's in it makes it taste delicious." Jack said with a huge grin, their was no way he was going home sober tonight.

"I like to think my mother did it to make it through the night," Tara announced, taking an extremely long swig of punch. Out of everyone here, she figured she had the most right to be drunk by the end of the night.

Jack laughed, "At least she'll be drunk too so maybe things won't really be that bad." He gave the small of her back an encouraging little rub.

She chuckled a bit weakly. "I guess I should really make that announcement soon. Otherwise, I'll lose the courage and just dance with you all night." She gave him a rather sly look. "Maybe we should get in a few more dances first. Just to be safe."

"Sounds good to me," he led Tara out to the dance floor an pulled her close, beginning to sway with her to the music. "Tara, you really would give all this up?"

Tara shrugged, leaning her head on his shoulder and wrapping her arms around him as they swayed. "All this was never really me, you know? I'm not saying I know where I do belong, I just know it was never here. And whatever price I have to pay to avoid being bound to Ronald Tyler for life, I'm willing to pay it." She smiled. "Besides, I have you."

"Yeah you have me," Jack said with a smile he pressed a tender kiss to her forehead. No matter what he knew he'd take care of her. She needed to find a place where she belonged.

Dances and punch, Tara decided, were the solution to all her problems. Punch and dances. So she alternated between them for the next hour or so, and by the time she was certain that all the guests had arrived and her parents were getting extremely antsy, Tara was, well...just a little bit drunk.
"I think it's time I should do this thing that I have been meaning to do all night," she said very grandly to Jack, slurring every word and swaying in his arms.

"I'm sure!" Tara flashed him a bright smile, kissed him for luck, and then walked--very unsteadily--back to the punch table, where she resisted the urge to pour herself another drink. Instead, she stood on a chair, cupped her hands around her mouth, and bellowed, "I HAVE AN ANNOUNCEMENT TO MAKE!"
It took a few more shouts before someone noticed and told the band to stop playing. When she yelled out the words again, they were audible throughout the room; her parents both approached, frowning at each other, and Irene and Isabel came out of the corner where they'd been sulking to see what all the fuss was about. Tara gulped and scanned the crowd, seeking out the newsies' faces for reassurance.

Jack gave her a thumbs up to reassure her, but he was probably more nervous than she was. He was definitely holding his breath.

Zippy gave Tara a reassuring smile, although she had no idea what her announcement was.

Meeting Jack's eyes and then Zippy's, Tara smiled weakly at them both, then realized she had everyone's attention. She cleared her throat. "I would like to announce," she said grandly...she met her father's eyes next, and immediately regretted it, as he looked as if he'd already like to strangle her for this unseemly behavior..."that I will not be marrying Mr. Ronald Tyler." A gasp of horror went up around the room. "Mr. Ronald Tyler is...is a cad, and a libertine, and a...a rake...and as you can see, he isn't even here tonight, because he is...indisposed." She found Tristan in the crowd and smirked. "And...and there is also the fact that my heart belongs to another. So I am hereby breaking my engagement!" She pulled a diamond ring out of her pocket and hurled it dramatically across the room.
For a few long moments, there was dead silence. Then Jonathan Fields sent his daughter an icy death glare. "If you do this, Tara, this family will not be supporting you any longer. Your school tuition will not be paid, and you will not be welcome in this home--"
"I've never been welcome in this home," Tara snapped, returning his glare with a drunk, angry glare of her own. "Or in this whole...this whole...society! Clara and Sebastian had the right idea when they ran away." And she half-toppled off the chair and stormed out of the ballroom.
