Fire couldn't help but laugh as she followed after Wraith, her hand squeezing Wraith's tighter. "It's fine," she answered back, half-laughing and half-yelling. She hurried down the sidewalk, laughing louder with each raindrop that fell on the both of them. "How far from home are we?"

"Uh...six or seven streets!" Wraith admitted. "But I'm really fast!" Well, it was true. For someone who was practically small enough to fit in your pocket, she could be a blur of speed when she wanted to. At Fire's laughter, her dismay dissolved, and soon she was laughing too, pulling her past one street after another as fast as she could. By the time the lodging house loomed in the distance, of course, she was soaked through and shaking like a leaf...but somehow, the hand that held Fire's was still warm.

Fire felt her heart sink when the lodging house came into view. Did this all really have to end already? She gave Wraith's hand one last squeeze before reluctantly letting go of her hand. She no longer had the emptiness of the graveyard or the rainstorm to 'excuse' her for holding Wraith's hand anymore. They were home, and eyes were everywhere. Sadly, it was time for her to go back into hiding. "This is it, isn't it," she remarked sadly, her head turning to look at the lodging house's front door.

Wraith looked at her in confusion. "Th-this is what?" she stammered, not out of shyness for once, but because her teeth were chattering. She was looking forward to getting inside, changing her clothes, and curling up beside the parlor fire. And hopefully beside another Fire as well. A sly smile tugged at her lips.

"The end?" she asked, disappointed. She looked away from the front door and shrugged. "It's a whole different world from the graveyard in there. We're not quite so alone anymore." Well, unless they were to go to the attic. She fought back a quick smirk, but laughed as a raindrop fell right on the tip of her nose.
"We better go inside before we get sick... you think?"

Wraith's smile drooped a little as Fire's words sank in. In the absolutely giddy rush of this new romance, she'd almost forgotten secrecy. But Fire was right...they weren't alone anymore. "Y-yeah," she agreed, pushing the door open and hurrying inside. "We'd better get changed..." She looked down at her blouse and skirt ruefully. They were dripping all over the floor. Plus, there was the whole clinging-to-the-skin issue. She led the way toward the stairs.

"These clothes won't be dry by morning, will they?" Fire asked softly, as she approached the staircase. She pouted just a bit, not at all liking how her clothes were clinging to her as if someone had glued them on. How could it be so uncomfortable now when, just moments before, it felt just fine?
Carefully, Fire lifted up the bottom of her skirt, bunched it up, and held it to one side before carefully wringing it out into a small puddle. Sure, she might get in trouble for that eventually, but she was far more concerned with getting rid of the excess water currently weighing her down.
She placed her free hand on the banister before carefully climbing the first few steps. She paused and looked over her shoulder at Wraith, her forehead wrinkled. "Do you think we'll wake up the others?"

"Hope not," Wraith whispered, only now remembering to lower her voice. She was silently cursing her long hair, which seemed to be single-handedly causing a small river to flow down the staircase. She wrung it out over the banister as best she could, then met Fire's eyes and had to cover her mouth as she started to giggle again. "We'll be quiet," she gasped out once she managed to stop, and edged up the stairs and along the hall, wondering what sort of reaction they'd get if they did wake someone.

Fire sighed and climbed the rest of the staircase, stopping abruptly at the top. "Maybe we shouldn't go in there," she remarked as she chewed lightly on her lower lip. "If we wake anybody, they're going to be mad. If we wake anybody and we're both soaking wet, well, I don't know."
She glanced down the darkened hallway, her hands wringing together slowly. "Maybe we should go to the attic. Just this once."

Wraith gave her a quick glance, wondering exactly what she was thinking. Her eyes strayed to the trapdoor in the ceiling. "Do you think there are, um...dry clothes...in the attic?"

"There might be. I didn't really look in too many of the boxes," Fire confessed with a shrug. "I know there are lots of blankets, so it wouldn't be cold. No one else would be up there, so we wouldn't be waking anybody else up."
She looked down at her feet, her shoulders shrugging again. "Maybe it's a bad idea."

"It's an excellent idea," Wraith announced with a surprising amount of confidence, considering she kind of felt about the attic the way Fire seemed to have felt about the graveyard--though for very different reasons, no doubt.
Her first time with Kennedy...that stupid romance novel...
She dismissed all thoughts of it, made a valiant jump for the trapdoor, came nowhere near the handle, and sighed. "This lodging house discriminates against people under five feet tall."

"It's okay, I'll get it," Fire offered sweetly. She reached up for the cord and grabbed it, carefully lowering the trap door. She carefully steadied the pull-down ladder before taking a step back. "After you!"
She looked over at Wraith, lightly chewing on her lower lip. Her forehead wrinkled when she saw the look on the other girl's face. "Are you okay?"

"Yeah, of course," Wraith said, summoning a smile. "Just cold. Thanks," she added as the ladder tumbled down. And she scurried up like a nimble little squirrel, not giving herself time to think about it.

Carefully, Fire followed Wraith up the ladder and into the attic. Once inside, she pulled the ladder back up and closed the hatch. "I should have thought about bringing a candle up here to give us some light. Sorry about that," she apologized bashfully.
"Now, how bout those blankets?" she asked with a laugh before carefully opening up a nearby trunk.
