"Too late," she snapped back, feeling anxious know that she truly knew how Eli felt all these years. "I'm sorry, Eli, I really am..."

"Stop. Don't feel sorry for me!" Eli exclaimed, regretting saying anything to her. "You've done nothing wrong. You've been great, my best friend. I've been so lucky to have you!"

"But obviously, I did something wrong since I don't talk to you at school," she replied gently, still worried. She was determined to get to the bottom of this. Did he want to be popular? Why didn't he tell her earlier?

Eli was getting frustrated. "Adri, please. It was just an example, its okay that you don't!" He was turning red, and he stood up, looking at her. "Maybe you should go. Dinner's almost ready."

"Can you at least try to make me understand?" she said, standing up to face him, her face full of worry.

Eli grabbed a picture off his nightstand, handing it to her. It was of his 13th birthday party. He had a pool party, and invited 20 people from class. Only 3 people showed up- Adri, Luke, and Luke's younger brother. "Ignorance is bliss, Adri."

Adri frowned as she looked at the picture. She remembered that day well and she tried her best to make it up to him in any way she can. But then, there's not much you can do when you're dealing with cliques at school.
"Just... promise me you won't change after you get all the attention now you're all buff and good looking," she finally said after a couple of moments. "Or else I'll really get mad at you and find a new best friend."

"That won't happen," Eli assured her, taking the picture back and placing it back on his nightstand. It wasn't just a bad reminder- it was a good one. Quality friends stick around. "Do you wanna stay for dinner? Mom's making meatloaf."

Adri smirked. "Now you're letting me stay for dinner? You're not kicking me out of your house anymore?"

He blushed, shrugging. "You called me good looking," he joked, shooting her a teasing smile.

"Really?" she laughed, rolling her eyes at him and gently punching him on the shoulder. Yup, he definitely built some muscles. She cleared her throat awkwardly, wondering what was going on with her.

Eli turned off the video game, and then led the way downstairs. "Ah, ma, you can't put so much cheese on the pasta anymore. I'm dieting, remember?" Eli said to his mother, who sighed loudly.
"Between you on your diet and your sister becoming vegetarian, I'm finding it hard to keep up. Adri, do you have any new dietary restrictions I should know about?" Eli chuckled and kissed his mom on the cheek.

"No, Auntie, you can put as much cheese as you want on my plate," she grinned, feeling right at home. Adri was lucky to have a fast metabolism, which she sometimes took for granted.

Everyone sat down at the dinner table, and all of Eli's family kept asking Adri questions about her summer.

Once they were done with dinner, Adri took the dishes to the sink. "It's alright, Auntie, Eli and I can wash the dishes," she smirked, glancing over at him.
